Abstract Morphological alterations of the liver of zebra fish ( Brachydanio rerio ) following prolonged exposure to 0.1, 1 and 5 mg · l −1 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) were investigated by means of light and electron microscopy. Based on marked sexual dimorphism in control animals, liver recactions were both sex- and dose-dependent. Nowadays the measurement of the nuchal translucency thickness is being used as part of routine ultrasound scanning during the end of the first trimester of pregnancy, for the screening of chromosomal defects, as trisomy 21. The melatonin metabolism in the mammalian pineal gland is under the clear influence of sympathetic fibers originating in the superior cervical ganglia (SCG). Previous studies suggested that also pineal ‘synaptic’ ribbons (SR) are regulated by the gland’s sympathetic innervation. To gain more insight into the mechanisms involved SR numbers were determined in adult rats which were chemically sympathectomized as newborns by injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). In control animals (saline injections), a clear day/night difference in the number of SR is present. AbstractBackgroundThis was a prospective study of radiofrequency segmental thermal ablation (RFA) for the treatment of incompetent varicose great saphenous veins (GSVs). The present report describes long-term follow-up at 5 years.MethodsThe 5-year follow-up of this multicentre European study included assessment of the Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS), and GSV occlusion and reflux on duplex imaging.ResultsA total of 225 patients had 295 GSVs treated by RFA, achieving an initial vein occlusion rate of 100 per cent. HDlive (high-definition live or real-time US), a new ultrasound software, combines a movable virtual adjustable light source in a software that calculates the proportion of light reflecting through surface structures, depending on light direction. The light source can be manually positioned to illuminate the desired area of interest. The ultrasound technician can control light intensity to create shadows that enhance image quality. HDlive is an innovation that will render even more realistic images of fetal anatomy and of gynecologic lesions. The full potential of this new technology is yet to be determined and deserves scientific evaluation.
Effects of diazinon exposure on cholinesterase activity in different tissues of European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

Cholinesterase (ChE) activity was measured in brain, plasma, and whole eye of Anguilla anguilla experimentally exposed to a sublethal concentration of 0.042 mg/liter (0.50 of the 96-hr LC50) of the organophosphorous pesticide diazinon. Whole eye was the tissue which revealed higher values of ChE activity (8.17 micromol/min/g) in nonexposed animals. Brain, plasma, and whole eye ChE activity of A. anguilla was inhibited at 6, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr of diazinon exposure. Pesticide induced significant inhibitory effects on the ChE activity of this species ranging from >70% inhibition in brain tissue to >90% in plasma samples.
