Contrast-enhanced ultrasound of hepatocellular carcinoma: where do we stand?

2019

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) represents a significant breakthrough in ultrasonography (US), and it is being increasingly used for the evaluation of focal liver lesions (FLLs). CEUS is unique in that it allows non-invasively assessment of liver perfusion in real time throughout the vascular phase, which has led to dramatic improvements in the diagnostic accuracy of US in the detection and characterization of FLLs, the choice of therapeutic procedures, and the evaluation of response. Currently, CEUS is included as a part of the suggested diagnostic work-up of FLLs, including in cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, resulting in better patient management and cost-effective d…

Endorektale Sonographie zur präoperativen Beurteilung der Infiltrationstiefe von Rektumtumoren

1990

From June 1987 to February 1990, 142 out of 319 patients with rectal tumours were investigated by ultrasound scanning with the object of ascertaining the depth to which the tumour had infiltrated. This examination proved completely feasible in 130 of these patients (84 men, 46 women, mean age 61.7 [42-84] years). Postoperative histological examination revealed an adenoma (n = 59) or a T1 carcinoma (n = 19), while intrarectal ultrasonography disclosed the same findings in 79 patients (true-positive in 75 cases). A T2-tumour was diagnosed by histological examination in 24 patients, and by ultrasonography in 22 (true-positive in 18 cases). The histological diagnosis of a tumour in stage T3 or …

OP0090 THE OCCURRENCE OF SUBCLINICAL AND CLINICAL ATHEROSCLEROSIS IN RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS, RESULTS FROM THE 3-YEAR, MULTICENTER, PROSPECTIVE, OBSERVA…

2019

Background The systemic inflammatory process and the “traditional” cardiovascular (CV) risk factors could synergize the enhancement of CV burden in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) [1]. Objectives To assess the occurrence and the predictive factors of subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis in patients with RA. Methods During 2015, consecutive patients, admitted to Italian Rheumatology Units, were assessed in GIRRCS (Gruppo Italiano di Ricerca in Reumatologia Clinica e Sperimentale) cohort [2]. After that, patients were followed-up in a 3-year, prospective, observational study, assessing the occurrence of subclinical (carotid and/or peripheral arteries atherosclerotic lesions detected by ultrasou…

Impact of an intensive education programme of diagnostic lung and lower limb ultrasound on physiotherapist knowledge: A pilot study.

2021

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Diagnostic ultrasound of the respiratory system and peripheral muscular systems is increasingly being used by clinicians. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge outcomes of a bespoke one‐day curriculum for physiotherapists that incorporated lung, diaphragm and lower limb muscle diagnostic ultrasound theory and practical training in image acquisition and analysis. METHODS: A one‐day course comprised of three instructors and 32 participants on key diagnostic ultrasound findings of the lungs, diaphragm and lower limb musculature included didactic lectures combined with expert‐led hands‐on training in practical sessions. Participants undertook pre‐ and post‐co…

Accuracy of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of acute calculous cholecystitis: review of the literature.

2013

Background To evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of acute calculous cholecystitis in comparison with other imaging modalities. Methods The authors performed a search of the Medline/ PubMed (National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland) for original research and review publications examining the accuracy of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of acute calculous cholecystitis. The search design utilized a single or combination of the following terms : (1) acute cholecystitis, (2) ultrasonography, (3) computed tomography, (4) magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography and (5) cholescintigraphy. This review was restricted to human studies and to English-language literat…

Undetected Malignancies of the Breast: Dynamic Contrast-enhanced MR Imaging at 1.0 T

2002

To assess the prevalence and characteristics of malignant breast lesions not identified with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.Breast tissue specimens were obtained in 464 of 967 patients who had undergone dynamic gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted fast low-angle shot three-dimensional MR imaging of both breasts. A comparison of sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of the prospectively recorded findings of mammography, ultrasonography (US), and MR imaging with the histopathologic results was performed with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. MR imaging examination findings that caused a false-negative diagnosis were reviewed to identify possible sources of error.Hi…

Graph-matching based CTA.

2009

Separating bone, calcification, and vessels in computer tomography angiography (CTA) allows for a detailed diagnosis of vessel stenosis. This paper presents a new, graph-based technique that solves this difficult problem with high accuracy. The approach requires one native data set and one that is contrast enhanced. On each data set, an attributed level-graph is derived and both graphs are matched by dynamic programming to differentiate between bone, on one hand side, and vessel/calcification on the other hand side. Lumen and calcified regions are then separated by a profile technique. Evaluation is based on data from vessels of pelvis and lower extremities of elderly patients. Due to subst…
