Endoluminal sonography in follow-up of rectal carcinoma.

1989

Fourteen patients who had undergone local excision, anterior resection or low anterior resection for rectal carcinoma were examined by endoscopic ultrasonography. In two of three cases of local recurrent carcinomas, endoscopic sonography was superior to computed tomography in determining the depth of tumor infiltration. There were difficulties in differentiating scar tissue from local tumor formation when the mucosa appeared normal upon endoscopic examination. Only repeated follow-up examinations starting in the postoperative period, will allow a differentiation between scar tissue and local tumor recurrence.

Influence of rigid taping on the acromiohumeral distance in healthy recreational weightlifters

2021

BackgroundSubacromial pain syndrome is one of the most frequent injuries in overhead athletes, and it takes place when the acromiohumeral distance (AHD) is narrowed. Conservative treatment is the first approach to this syndrome, being shoulder taping one of the most used techniques. Although there are quite a few studies that analyse the effect of taping on the AHD, most of them do not include sham tapings. This study aimed to examine if the Relocation of the humeral head (RHH) taping produced an increase in the AHD in healthy recreationally weightlifter males, quantifying the change that may be due to a placebo effect.MethodsThe design of this study was a two-group pretest-posttest, in whi…

Feasible Evaluation of PQ Bypass Results with Duplex Ultrasound

2019

Abstract Patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) have substantially impaired health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). Chronic lower limb ischaemia due to the atherosclerotic occlusion of infra-inguinal arteries is one of the most important causes of invalidity among smokers over the age of fifty. Historically, these lesions were treated by open bypass surgery. Less invasive endovascular revascularisation methods are available to treat short lesions, while treatment of long lesions are lacking. Fully endovascular trans-venous femoro-popliteal bypass (PQ Bypass, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA) to treat long femoral lesions has been developed recently. The objective of the study was to evalu…

SIUMB guidelines and recommendations for the correct use of ultrasound in the management of patients with focal liver disease

2019

The present document describes the SIUMB (Italian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology) guidelines for the use of ultrasound in the management of focal liver disease. The aim of the paper is to provide a clinical practice guideline for Italian physicians who are approaching the ultrasound study of a focal liver lesion. In particular, these guidelines provide simple indications, recommendations and general practice advices for the correct use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in this scenario. They represent the SIUMB position of the ultrasound role in the diagnostic flow charts of the principal focal liver lesions, and are in agreement with other, previously published national…

Clinical case and short review of extreme short bowel syndrome: an update 21 years after

2016

Short bowel syndrome refers to the malabsorptive state caused by loss of significant portions of the small intestine, whose clinical framework is characterized by malnutrition, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, and low-weight-related symptoms/signs. These clinical conditions seem to be related to the length of resection. Twenty-one years ago we reported the clinical case of an infant, who underwent a massive resection of the loops of the small intestine, of the cecum and of part of the ascending colon, due to intestinal malrotation with volvulus. The residual small intestine measured just 11 cm and consisted of the duodenum and a small part of jejunum, in the absence of the ileocecal valv…

A Five-Step Vascular Ultrasound Examination in Heart Failure: The First Two Years of the "ABCDE" G-SIUMB Multicenter Study 2018-2022.

2020

The aim of this study is the creation of a 5-step ultrasound examination to evaluate and monitor Heart Failure (HF) patients during hospitalization and follow-up. “ABCDE” is the acronym of an Italian multicentre study composed of a consecutive sample of HF patients admitted from the Emergency to the Internal Medicine/Geriatric Departments of several Italian hospitals. The “ABCDE” score includes the evaluations of A, the Ankle-brachial index (ABI), B, the B-lines, C, the Carotid intima media thickness (CIMT), D, the Diameter of the abdominal aorta and of the inferior cave vein and E, the echocardiographic assessment of the ejection fraction. This paper reports the preliminary results. Up to …

Ultrasound as first line step in anaemia diagnostics

2019

This review covers the role of ultrasonography as an essential non-invasive diagnostic approach when facing patients with anemia, a common clinical problem. Abdomen ultrasound is well recognized as a first-line examination in the setting of blood loss, both acute and chronic. Less is clear about the additional opportunities, given by ultrasound in anemia, due to the many other possible causes.
Here we provide information on the utility of ultrasound in different contexts and a practical guide for clinicians facing anemic patients

Up-to-date imaging review of paediatric soft tissue vascular masses, focusing on sonography

2019

The purpose of this article is to provide an up-to-date overview on imaging of paediatric vascular soft tissue masses, including both neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. We describe the-often challenging-imaging diagnosis-mainly performed by ultrasound (and secondarily by MRI) and differential diagnosis of vascular soft tissue lesions in children. We underline how important it is to determine whether a vascular anomaly has a regional vascular origin, or if there are other entities, ranging from benign to malignant lesions, which have flow-signal or blood degradation products. Even though clinical examination and patient's history are the first and indispensable steps in the initial diagn…
