Transient Midinfrared Study of Light Induced Dissociation Reaction of Ru(dcbpy)(CO)2I2 in Solution

Illumination of Ru(dcbpy)I2(CO)2 (dcbpy = 4,4‘-dicarboxy-2,2‘-bipyridine) with (near) ultraviolet light induces dissociation of one of the CO groups of the complex. In solution the opened coordination site of the metal is occupied by a solvent molecule. In the present study the kinetics of the ligand exchange reaction has been studied in solution with femtosecond time resolution by probing the CO stretching vibrations of the reactant and the product molecules Ru(dcbpy)I2(CO)(EtOH) in the infrared and probing electronic transitions in the visible spectral regions. Effects of ultraviolet light on immune parameters of the roach

Ultraviolet B radiation penetrates into water and can affect fish health and the immune system, as is the case with mammals. Teleost fish, the roach, were exposed to UVB irradiation in aquariums and a panel of immune parameters was determined. In addition to altered blood picture and respiratory burst by blood leukocytes, changes were noted also in major lymphatic organs. Respiratory burst and natural cytotoxicity activity of head kidney granulocytes and mitogen-activated proliferation of splenic lymphocytes were suppressed. Effects of photodynamic processes and ultraviolet light on duck and hen egg-white lysozymes.

— The photochemical yields for inactivation and amino acid destruction in hen and duck egg-white lysozyme are presented. Duck lysozyme II is devoid of histidine but it has two more tyrosine residues than does hen lysozyme. The data indicate that sensitized oxidation of the single histidine residue of hen lysozyme is of no significance for the inactivation of this lysozyme. The ultraviolet destruction of tryptophan and cystine residues appears to be equally related with the loss in enzymatic activity of hen lysozyme. In the case of duck lysozyme, however, the ultraviolet inactivation appears to be predominantly governed by the destruction of cystine residues.

1. 8-Azido-adenosine 5'-triphosphate (n83ATP) is a suitable photoaffinity label for F1 ATPase from Micrococcus luteus. The nucleotide is a substrate in the presence of bivalent cations and inhibits the enzyme irreversibly upon irradiation with ultraviolet light above 300 nm. 2. More than 80% of the label is covalently bound to the beta subunits in the presence of bivalent cations. Labeling and inactivation is decreased by protection with ADP, ATP or adenyl-5'-yl imidodiphosphate. Attraction of kestrels to vole scent marks visible in ultraviolet light

IN northern Europe, broad four-year oscillations in small rodent and raptor populations are synchronous over hundreds of square kilometers1–6. Crashes in vole populations can induce wide emigration (> 1,000 km) of their predators7 –9, but almost nothing is known about how predators rapidly detect areas of vole abundance. Here we report on laboratory and field experiments on voles (Microtus agrestis) and kestrels (Falco tinnunculus). Voles mark their runaways with urine and faeces, which are visible in ultraviolet light.
