AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a metabolic master switch expressed in a great number of cells and tissues. AMPK is thought to modulate the cellular response to different stresses that increase cellular AMP concentration. The adenosine analog, 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-β-D-ribofuranoside (AICAR) is an AMPK activator used in many studies to assess the effects of AMPK activation on cellular metabolism and function. In recent years, human mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been extensively studied. Their key characteristics of long-term self-renewal and a capacity to differentiate into diverse mature tissues favour their use in regenerative medicine applications. EGFL7 ligates αvβ3 integrin to enhance vessel formation

Angiogenesis, defined as blood vessel formation from a preexisting vasculature, is governed by multiple signal cascades including integrin receptors, in particular integrin αVβ3. Here we identify the endothelial cell (EC)-secreted factor epidermal growth factor-like protein 7 (EGFL7) as a novel specific ligand of integrin αVβ3, thus providing mechanistic insight into its proangiogenic actions in vitro and in vivo. Specifically, EGFL7 attaches to the extracellular matrix and by its interaction with integrin αVβ3 increases the motility of EC, which allows EC to move on a sticky underground during vessel remodeling. Sirenomelia, case report and review of the literature.

We present a case of sirenomelia diagnosed in the first trimester of pregnancy. The ultrasound examination showed fused lower extremities and an anechoic structure in the lower abdomen that is clue in the early diagnosis. The postmortem study showed the existence of a single umbilical artery (vitelline artery), with an origin in the abdominal aorta. This finding not only explained the presence of a vascular steal with subsequent underdeveloped of pelvic organs, but also differentiated this condition from caudal regression syndrome.

Spontaneous rupture of umbilical hernia in end stage liver disease patient: injection of fibrin glue as a temporary solution.

Background. Umbilical hernia is a common disease, which occurs in 20% of cirrhotic patients in the presence of persistent ascites. A rare but dangerous complication of this disease in end stage liver patient is a spontaneous rupture of umbilical hernia with ascitic fluid leaking. Up to date there is no general consensus on its most appropriate treatment. Case report. This study was aimed to explore whether an antihypertensive lactoferrin hydrolysate (LFH) can inhibit angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) activity and modify the expression of genes related to hypertension in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). LFH induced significant inhibition of ACE activity but it did not affect ACE mRNA levels after 24 h of exposure.
