CX3CR1/CX3CL1 Axis Mediates Platelet–Leukocyte Adhesion to Arterial Endothelium in Younger Patients with a History of Idiopathic Deep Vein Thrombosis

2018

AbstractMechanisms linking deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and subclinical atherosclerosis and risk of cardiovascular events are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential impact of CX3CR1/CX3CL1 axis in DVT-associated endothelial dysfunction. The study included 22 patients (age: 37.5 ± 8.2 years) with a history of idiopathic DVT and without known cardiovascular risk factors and 23 aged-matched control subjects (age: 34 ± 7.8 years). Flow cytometry was used to evaluate peripheral markers of platelet activation, leukocyte immunophenotypes and CX3CR1/CX3CL1 expression in both groups. A flow chamber assay was employed to measure leukocyte arrest under dynamic conditio…

Neutrophil‐mediated enhancement of angiogenesis and osteogenesis in a novel triple cell co‐culture model with endothelial cells and osteoblasts

2017

Repair and regeneration of critical‐sized bone defects remain a major challenge in orthopaedic and craniomaxillofacial surgery. Until now, attempts to bioengineer bone tissue have been hindered by the inability to establish proper angiogenesis and osteogenesis in the tissue construct. In the present study, we established a novel triple cell co‐culture model consisting of osteoblasts, endothelial cells, and neutrophils and conducted a systematic investigation of the effects of neutrophils on angiogenesis and osteogenesis. Neutrophils significantly increased angiogenesis in the tissue construct, evidenced by the formation of microvessel‐like structures with an extensive lattice‐like, stable t…

Prenatal Exposure to Organochlorine Compounds and Birth Size

2011

Objective: To investigate the possible association between birth size and cord concentrations of some organochlorine compounds (OCs), including 4,4′-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), 4,4′-1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-dichlorodiphenyl)ethylene (DDE), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), β-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH), 4 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners (118, 138, 153, and 180), and their sum (ΣPCBs) in a birth cohort in Valencia, Spain. Study Design: A total of 494 mothers and their newborns (born 2003–2006) participated in the study. Multivariate linear regression analyses were performed between birth weight, length, or head circumference and OC concentrations. Results: Median concentrations of…

Testosterone administration increases leukocyte-endothelium interactions and inflammation in transgender men

2021

Objective To evaluate the effect of testosterone treatment on metabolic and inflammation parameters and leukocyte-endothelium interactions in transgender men (TGM). Design Prospective observational study. Setting University hospital. Patient(s) One hundred fifty-seven TGM. Intervention(s) Administration of testosterone undecanoate (1,000 mg, intramuscular) every 12 weeks. Main Outcome Measure(s) Endocrine parameters, adhesion molecules (vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1, and E-selectin), proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha were evaluated in serum before and after treatment using Luminex’s xMAP technology. In additi…

Tentacle-shaped mesh for fixation-free repair of umbilical hernias

2019

Purpose: Mesh fixation and broad overlap represent an open issue in umbilical hernia repair. A proprietary-designed implant with tentacle straps at its boundary has been developed to ensure a suture-free repair and a broader coverage of the abdominal wall. The study describes the results of umbilical hernia procedures carried out with the tentacle-shaped implant and the related surgical technique. Methods: A proprietary tentacle-shaped flat mesh having a central body with integrated radiating arms at its edge was used to repair large umbilical hernias in 62 patients. The implant was placed in preperitoneal sublay. The friction of the straps, crossing the abdominal wall thanks to a special n…

Invasive fungal disease in patients undergoing umbilical cord blood transplantation after myeloablative conditioning regimen

2018

OBJECTIVE Characteristics and risk factors (RFs) of invasive fungal disease (IFD) have been little studied in the setting of umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT). METHOD We retrospectively included 205 single-unit myeloablative UCBT recipients with a median follow-up of 64 months. RESULTS Fifty-six episodes of IFD were observed in 48 patients (23%) at a median time of 123 days after stem cell infusion. Invasive mold disease (IMD) occurred in 42 cases, 38 of them (90%) caused by invasive aspergillosis whereas invasive yeast disease (IYD) occurred in 14 cases, most of them due to candidemia (n = 12, 86%). The 5-year cumulative incidence of IFD, IMDs, and IYDs was 24% 19%, and 7%, respe…

Durability of open popliteal artery aneurysm repair

2014

Objective The objective of this study was to analyze our long-term results after open surgery for popliteal artery aneurysm. Methods Records of patients who received surgery between 1998 and 2010 were retrieved from a computerized database and analyzed retrospectively. End points of the study were perioperative mortality and morbidity and patency and limb salvage rate. Results Two hundred and six popliteal aneurysms (median diameter, 30 mm; interquartile range, 18 mm) were treated (161 elective, 45 emergent) in 154 patients (mean age, 67 ± 11 years) using vein grafts (82%) via the medial approach (92%). Above-knee popliteal artery (45%) and below-knee popliteal artery (65%) were the predomi…

Single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy: Our experience and review of literature

2016

Aim After the revolution in the surgery of gallbladder stones represented by the laparoscopic cholecystectomy, we tried a new technique that further maximize the aesthetic results and that at the same time is of easy learning for young surgeons. Patients and methods From January 2011 to December 2012 we performed at our department 320 cholecystectomy: 27 in laparotomy and 293 in laparoscopy. Of these, 88 underwent to Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), namely the Single Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SILC), in recruited patients aged between 19-65 years; 56 patients were females and 32 were males. Results The laparoscopic cholecystectomy with the SILS methodology is a safe …
