New opportunities at the next-generation neutrino experiments I: BSM neutrino physics and dark matter

2020

Abstract The combination of the high intensity proton beam facilities and massive detectors for precision measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters including the charge-parity violating (CPV) phase will open the door to help make beyond the standard model (BSM) physics reachable even in low energy regimes in the accelerator-based experiments. Large-mass detectors with highly precise tracking and energy measurements, excellent timing resolution, and low energy thresholds will enable the searches for BSM phenomena from cosmogenic origin, as well. Therefore, it is also conceivable that BSM topics in the next-generation neutrino experiments could be the dominant physics topics in the fore…

Signatures of primordial black hole dark matter at DUNE and THEIA

2021

Primordial black holes (PBHs) are a potential dark matter candidate whose masses can span over many orders of magnitude. If they have masses in the $10^{15}-10^{17}$ g range, they can emit sizeable fluxes of MeV neutrinos through evaporation via Hawking radiation. We explore the possibility of detecting light (non-)rotating PBHs with future neutrino experiments. We focus on two next generation facilities: the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) and THEIA. We simulate the expected event spectra at both experiments assuming different PBH mass distributions and spins, and we extract the expected 95% C.L. sensitivities to these scenarios. Our analysis shows that future neutrino experime…

Physics potential of the Jiangmen underground neutrino observatory

2019

JUNO (Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory) is a 20 kton multipurpose neutrinodetector under construction in China and it will be completed in 2021. The detector will belocated near the the city of Jiangmen, 53 km away from two nuclear power plants that willprovide the neutrino flux for the main sear of the observatory. The main physics goal is the determination of the neutrino Mass Hierarchy, even if will play animportant also in other topics, such as: neutrino oscillation, solar neutrino, SuperNova neutrinos, geoneutrinos and atmosperic neutrinos among others

Performance of tracking stations of the underground cosmic-ray detector array EMMA

2018

Abstract The new cosmic-ray experiment EMMA operates at the depth of 75 m (50 GeV cutoff energy for vertical muons; 210 m.w.e.) in the Pyhasalmi mine, Finland. The underground infrastructure consists of a network of eleven stations equipped with multi-layer, position-sensitive detectors. EMMA is designed for cosmic-ray composition studies around the energy range of the knee, i.e., for primary particles with energies between 1 and 10 PeV. In order to yield significant new results EMMA must be able to record data in the full configuration for about three years. The key to the success of the experiment is the performance of its tracking stations. In this paper we describe the layout of EMMA an…

L’ultimo sprofondamento a Marsala: l’evento del 21 novembre 2013

2015

The Marsala area, at the western end of Sicily, has been historically interested by quarry activities, both at surface and underground. The carved rocks are Lower Pleistocene calcarenites, defined as “Calcarenite di Marsala” and referred to the Marsala syntheme. The subterranean quarries, now abandoned, show increasing instability signs becoming in time a risk factor for several causes, among which: a) breakdowns due to poor (weak) strength of rock and to large size of voids; b) progressive weathering of rock; c) effects of the discontinuities in the rock mass with the pillars and/or walls of the underground quarries. These factors contributed to enlargement of the subterranean voids and to…

The Effects of Structure on the One Dimensional Compression Behaviour of a Porous Calcarenite

2019

Human settlements built on weak rock deposits are often characterized by instabilities or collapse that may involve the underground cavities and consequently the above buildings. Underground calcarenite quarries in Marsala have been involved in a number of collapses that have seriously damaged numerous buildings. Unfortunately proper engineering solutions have not yet been identified according to the different and special cases and to the properties of this structured material. In order to investigate structure effects on the behaviour of the porous calcarenite of Marsala, this paper presents a comparison between the one dimensional compression behaviour of the intact rock and of the same w…

Il sistema cava-concimaia nella Fossa della Garofala a Palermo

2020

During the 60s and 70s of the 20th century, the widespread construction of new buildings in the agricultural areas around the city centre of Palermo have changed the original landscape. A rare exception is represented by an area called Fossa della Garofala; in this place the topic of “stratification” creates a connection between the geological history and the most recent anthropogenic interventions. Here, one of the places of greatest interest where the signs of a very distant past and a very recent past gather and the epigeal and hypogeal dimensions are put in an immediate relationship is certainly the original system consisting of a quarry and a so called concimaia. If on one hand, the co…

ARCHITETTURE PER LE ACQUE SOTTERRANEE. CONSERVAZIONE E VALORIZZAZIONE DEL PATRIMONIO CAVO A PALERMO

2019

The valorisation policies and protection of “visible” architectural heritage are often promoted by the public opinion, that immediately perceives in the artefacts degradation the risk of an irreparable loss. Conversely, the safeguard of the underground built heritage is ever more difficult to achieve. It is the case of the "hollow architecture" functional to ensuring water provisioning in the Piana di Palermo: “horizontal wells” and “qanat”. These artefacts date back to the sixteenth century, though an older dating is not to be excluded. The need for studies on underground historical construction is more evident if we consider the scarcity of documentary material and specialised literature.…
