Search for Gluinos in Events with Two Same-Sign Leptons, Jets, and Missing Transverse Momentum with the ATLAS Detector in Collisions at
2012
A search is presented for gluinos decaying via the supersymmetric partner of the top quark using events with two same-sign leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The analysis is performed ...
Relating quarks and leptons without grand-unification
2011
In combination with supersymmetry, flavor symmetry may relate quarks with leptons, even in the absence of a grand-unification group. We propose an SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) model where both supersymmetry and the assumed A4 flavor symmetries are softly broken, reproducing well the observed fermion mass hierarchies and predicting: (i) a relation between down-type quarks and charged lepton masses, and (ii) a correlation between the Cabibbo angle in the quark sector, and the reactor angle characterizing CP violation in neutrino oscillations.
Asymmetric tri-bi-maximal mixing and residual symmetries
2019
Asymmetric tri-bi-maximal mixing is a recently proposed, grand unified theory (GUT) based, flavor mixing scheme. In it, the charged lepton mixing is fixed by the GUT connection to down-type quarks and a $\mathcal{T}_{13}$ flavor symmetry, while neutrino mixing is assumed to be tri-bi-maximal (TBM) with one additional free phase. Here we show that this additional free phase can be fixed by the residual flavor and CP symmetries of the effective neutrino mass matrix. We discuss how those residual symmetries can be unified with $\mathcal{T}_{13}$ and identify the smallest possible unified flavor symmetries, namely $(\mathbb{Z}_{13}\times\mathbb{Z}_{13})\rtimes \mathrm{D}_{12}$ and $(\mathbb{Z}_…
Mixing induced CP asymmetries in b → sγ decay and spontaneous CP violation
1998
Abstract We analyze the mixing induced CP asymmetry in the decay b → sγ in the left-right symmetric model with spontaneous CP . This model possesses the useful property that all the CP -violating observables can be expressed in term of a single phase, a ratio of scalar vevs, quark masses and weak mixing angles but not on unconstrained quantities such as Yukawa coupling or additional phases. The calculated CP asymmetry can be much larger than in the Standard Model.
Search for single top quark production inpp¯collisions ats=1.96 TeVin the missing transverse energy plus jets topology
2010
We report a search for single top quark production with the CDF II detector using 2.1 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity of pp collisions at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV. The data selected consist of events characterized by large energy imbalance in the transverse plane and hadronic jets, and no identified electrons and muons, so the sample is enriched in W{yields}{tau}{nu} decays. In order to suppress backgrounds, additional kinematic and topological requirements are imposed through a neural network, and at least one of the jets must be identified as a b quark jet. We measure an excess of signal-like events in agreement with the standard model prediction, but inconsistent with a model without si…
Search for a Heavy Toplike Quark inpp¯Collisions ats=1.96 TeV
2011
We present the results of a search for pair production of a heavy toplike (t') quark decaying to Wq final states using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb(-1) collected by the CDF II detector in pp collisions at √s=1.96 TeV. We perform parallel searches for t'→Wb and t'→Wq (where q is a generic down-type quark) in events containing a lepton and four or more jets. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t' quark mass, we set upper limits on the t't' production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to Wb (Wq) with mass below 358 (340) GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L.
Massive Spin One and Renormalizable Gauges
2015
For many decades of the last century, physicists were struggling to define consistent (renormalizable and unitarity preserving) models for spin-one massive particles (Proca fields). As we know, this was beautifully achieved by Weinberg, Salam and Glashow in 1967 when they proposed an electroweak unified theory which we now call the Standard Model. The electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism, among other things, generates mass terms for the W and Z bosons, while preserving renormalizability and unitarity. The longitudinal degrees of freedom of the massive spin-one particles are given by the Goldostone bosons. Choosing one gauge or another might seem just a matter of convenience and in most c…
Unified description of structure and reactions: implementing the Nuclear Field Theory program
2015
The modern theory of the atomic nucleus results from the merging of the liquid drop (Niels Bohr and Fritz Kalckar) and of the shell model (Marie Goeppert Meyer and Axel Jensen), which contributed the concepts of collective excitations and of independent-particle motion respectively. The unification of these apparently contradictory views in terms of the particle-vibration (rotation) coupling (Aage Bohr and Ben Mottelson) has allowed for an ever increasingly complete, accurate and detailed description of the nuclear structure, Nuclear Field Theory (NFT, developed by the Copenhagen-Buenos Aires collaboration) providing a powerful quantal embodiment. In keeping with the fact that reactions are…
Advanced models for nonlocal magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates based on Reissner mixed variational theorem
2019
In the present work, nonlocal layer-wise models for the analysis of magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates are formulated. An Eringen non-local continuum behaviour is assumed for the layers material; in particular, as usual in plate theories, partial in-plane nonlocality is assumed whereas local constitutive behaviour is considered in the thickness direction. The proposed plate theories are obtained via the Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem, assuming the generalized displacements and generalized out-of-plane stresses as primary variables, and expressing them as through-the-thickness expansions of suitably selected functions, considering the expansion order as a free parameter. In the …
