Norms matter! The role of international norms in EU policies on asylum and immigration

2014

Abstract This Article investigates how international norms impact on eu asylum and immigration policy. To this end we scrutinize the assumption that the robustness of international norms indicates the quality of eu integration. Drawing on international norms literature we argue that four characters define an international norms’ robustness: specificity in definition, binding force, coherence with domestic law and international law, and concordant understanding among actors. Our analysis covers three eu policy areas, asylum policy, family reunification policy, and labour migration policy. Across the three areas international norms had varying degrees of robustness at the time of eu negotiat…

Abstract In Europe, many countries are using genetic testin…

Processes and experiences of Portugal's international recruitment scheme of Colombian physicians: Did it work?

2017

Abstract The Portuguese Ministry of Health performed five international recruitment rounds of Latin American physicians due to the need for physicians in certain geographic areas of the country and in some specialties, as a temporary solution to shortages. Among these recruitments is that of Colombian physicians in 2011 that was the largest of the five groups. This paper presents an evaluation of the international recruitment procedure of Colombian physicians based on the criteria of procedural outcomes and health system outcomes. The methodology used is qualitative, based on semi-structured interviews with key informants and Colombian physicians recruited in Portugal and also on documentar…

Supersymmetric SO(10)-inspired GUTs with sliding scales

2013

We construct lists of supersymmetric models with extended gauge groups at intermediate steps, all of which are inspired by SO(10) unification. We consider three different kinds of setups: (i) the model has exactly one additional intermediate scale with a left-right (LR) symmetric group; (ii) SO(10) is broken to the LR group via an intermediate Pati-Salam scale; and (iii) the LR group is broken into SU(3)(c) X SU(2)(L) X U(1)(R) X U(1)(B-L), before breaking to the standard model (SM) group. We use sets of conditions, which we call the "sliding mechanism," which yield unification with the extended gauge group(s) allowed at arbitrary intermediate energy scales. All models thus can have new gau…

Franchisors' disclosure duty: market transparency and franchisee protection

2014

The franchisee is usually the most vulnerable part of the franchise relationship, and should therefore receive greater protection from the legal framework. In this regard, the franchisor's pre-contractual disclosure duty has evolved in its legal status. Whereas its original purpose was to ensure transparency in the market, it now serves to protect the franchisee. In this paper, we compare the franchisor's obligations established by the legal framework in Spain with those set out in the Model Law drawn up by The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law.

Novedades en la reagrupación de los progenitores extranjeros por parte de un menor comunitario

2011

[EN] This paper analyses the last novelties both in the EU law and in the spanish legal system concerning the legal status of those minors that enjoy citizenship of a member state and try to exercise their rights to family reunification with their anscestor, when these ancestors are national of athird Country. Specifically, the paper focuses on the analisis of two judgments: the Zambrano Case of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the ruling of the Courtfor contentious administrative proceedings of the Spanish Suprem Court of the1 of june 2010. Finally, the paper sheds light on the consequences of thesetwo rulings in the EU nationality law and in the field of minor rights inSpani…

Translations, Paratextual Mediation, and Ideological Closure

1996

Abstract: This article deals with the way so-called paratexts were used, in Finland in 1890-1939, in publishing translations of Anglo-American literature, and especially with the tendencies towards ideological closure that those paratexts manifest. The dominant ideology in the material is what could be called religious-conservative ideology, emphasizing the thought content of the works and their (educative, civilizing, sometimes also entertaining) impact on readers. This is due to the ideological unification process that penetrated the cultural institutions, which were still relatively undifferentiated and non-autonomous during the period in Finland. The article emphasizes that in studying …

Finitary unification in locally tabular modal logics characterized

2022

We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for finitary unification in locally tabular modal logics, solely in terms of Kripke models. We apply the conditions to establish the unification types of logics determined by simple finite frames. In particular, we show that unification is finitary (or unitary) in the logic determined by the fork (frame F4, see Fig. 6), the rhombus (frame F5), inGL.3m,GrzBd2,S4Bd2and other logics; whereas it is nullary in the logic of F6, and of the pentagon FN5. In Appendix analogous results are given for superintuitionistic logics.

Supersymmetric type-III seesaw mechanism: Lepton flavor violation and LHC phenomenology

2013

We study a supersymmetric version of the type-III seesaw mechanism considering two variants of the model: a minimal version for explaining neutrino data with only two copies of 24 superfields and a model with three generations of 24-plets. The latter predicts, in general, rates for mu -> e gamma inconsistent with experimental data. However, this bound can be evaded if certain special conditions within the neutrino sector are fulfilled. In the case of two 24-plets, lepton flavor violation constraints can be satisfied much more easily. After specifying the corresponding regions in the minimal supergravity parameter space, we show that under favorable conditions one can test the corresponding …
