The Free Movement Directive is the key EU legal instrument that regulates the free movement of persons within the thirty-one countries that make up the European Economic Area. The refurbishment of the building stock is a key strategy towards the achievement of the climate and energy goals of the European Union. This study aims at evaluating the energy and environmental impacts associated with retrofitting a residential apartment to improve its vertical envelope thermal insulation. Two insulation materials, stone wool and cellulose fibers, are compared. The life cycle assessment methodology is applied assuming 1 m2 of retrofitted vertical envelope as functional unit. In this case study, five international adoptees from Finland were interviewed about their search and reunion experiences to find out what meanings they ascribed to their identities and family relations. The thematic analysis yielded three themes: search and reunion in significant periods of life, meaning of reunion for identity, and belonging and relatedness within family. The paper presents researches on the possibilities and advantages for the environment of using bio-fuels , especially bio-ethanol and bio-gas. The international context is favorable to using bio-fuels, considering that a direction of European Union establishes that in 2020, 20% of the energy consumption of Romania must be provided by rechargeable energy. One source for producing bio-fuels, not so much used until now is sugar beet.
