The EU still has a democratic deficit and its legitimacy is strongly questioned. This reveals the importance of citizenship and participation in the context of the challenges the EU faces today. The article contributes to the current discussions on the shifting frameworks of participation and citizenship through empirical research into the EU’s participatory governance. It asks how participation is framed in terms of scale and how these scalar framings are used to formulate citizenship in selected projects funded by the EU programmes on citizenship and culture. Integration of Capital Markets from Central and Eastern Europe: Implications for EU Investors

Our paper investigates the extent of capital market co-movements between three emerging markets– Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland – and three developed markets from the European Union - Austria, France and Germany. We test whether an increase in correlations between the six markets took place in recent years, as revealing higher integration of capital markets in the region. We find a statistically significant positive trend in cross-market correlations between 1999 and 2008, before the emergence of the global financial crisis. W artykule poruszona została problematyka zmian poziomu życia w państwach członkowskich Unii Europejskiej, które przystąpiły do struktur unijnych po 2004 r. Podjęta została próba uchwycenia oddziaływania polityki UE na wyrównywanie poziomu życia w państwach członkowskich. Przyjęty w badaniu okres obejmuje lata 2004-2015. Za początek okresu badawczego przyjęty został rok 2004, ze względu na fakt, że w tym właśnie roku nastąpiło największe w historii UE rozszerzenie jej struktur. W badaniu wykorzystano metody taksonomiczne, w szczególności wskaźnik rozwoju Hellwiga jako syntetyczny miernik poziomu życia.

After first describing the history and context of Cohesion policies of the EU, the literature on European identity studies is reviewed. This chapter is dedicated to the issues relating to changes in the standard of living recorded in 25 EU countries, in particular in Poland and the Czech Republic. Given the availability of comparable and relevant statistical data, the standard of living was studied between 2005 and 2012. The study was conducted with the use of taxonomic method – Hellwig’s synthetic measure. The results indicated that in 2012 Poland and the Czech Republic recorded a growth in the standard of living compared to 2005. Memory and history are sometimes a strange couple. A striking illustration is given by the French Unionism in the twentieth century. Some events - 1906, 1920, 1936, 1947, 1968 ... - are engraved in the "memories" and they have founded a collective identity. However, taking the example of the CGT Congress of Amiens in 1906, several dimensions - a priori essential - of this "memory" can be discussed: the importance of the strike, the relationship between parties and unions, the historical weakness of the French unionism.
