The internationalisation of the Spanish food industry: the home market effect and European market integration
2015
<p>The objective of this study was to analyse, from a long-term perspective, the factors determining the process of the internationalisation of the Spanish agrifood industry. The paper concentrates on the empirical verification of the existence of a home market effect in the food and drink industries in Spain and on the effects on trade flows of integration into the European Union. With this aim in mind, we took into account the latest contributions to the estimation of the gravity equation for a sample of export flows from 13 agrifood subsectors between 1970 and 2012, with a destination of 175 markets. From the results of the study the existence of the “home market effect” stands out…
Currency unions and trade : what is the impact of the euro on trade in the euro area?
2012
The aim of this study is to estimate the effect of the euro on trade within the euro area. This has been a relevant question for European politicians ever since the launch of the common currency was agreed on in the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. To analyse the topic the gravity model of international trade augmented with several dummy variables is employed using panel data of 29 developed countries between 1995 and 2010. The estimated aggregate trade effect on the euro zone reaches 10 % in the most preferred regression and is comparable with earlier estimates. However, there is considerable variation in the results when different sample sizes are used. This could be a sign of omitted variable …
Towards resilient cities: Advancements allowed by a multi-criteria optimization tool to face the new challenges of European Union’s climate and energ…
2019
Abstract The United Nations as well as the European Union are strongly committed in promoting a transition towards more sustainable and resilient cities. Indeed, they are increasingly affected by different types of threats, among which the natural ones such as earthquakes, fires, and floods (shocks) and climate variability (stresses). Cities are quite often unable to cope with the adverse effects of such natural hazards. This circumstance leads to the need of introducing resilience-related criteria (besides commonly used sustainability indicators) in decision-making processes. This paper investigates at which extent the inclusion of such new indicators, within multi-criteria assessment tool…
Taidetta ja kohtaamisia : osallistujien kokemuksia EU:n osallistavassa hallinnassa
2019
Erilaiset osallistavat käytännöt ovat yhä yleisempiä hallinnon eri tasoilla. Euroopan unionissa osallistumista pyritään lisäämään muun muassa ohjelmilla, joilla rahoitetaan kansalaisten yhteistoimintaa eri aloilla. Rahoitusta jaetaan hakemusten perusteella hankkeille, joilla kansalaisia halutaan osallistaa EU:n toimintaan ja joita koordinoivat tyypillisesti kuntien tai kansalaisjärjestöjen työntekijät. Sellaisina hankkeet ovat osa EU:n osallistavaa hallintaa. Tässä artikkelissa kysytään, miltä EU:n osallistava hallinta näyttää ruohonjuuritasolla opiskelijoiden taidetoimintaa järjestävässä European Citizen Campus-hankkeessa (ECC), jolle myönnettiin tukea EU:n Kulttuuri-ohjelmasta vuosina 201…
Hallinnan keinot ja tilan politiikka : Euroopan unionin Itämeren alueen strategiassa
2014
Tutkimus tarkastelee hallinnan keinoja ja tilan politiikkaa Euroopan unionin (EU) Itämeren alueen strategiassa. Itämeren alueen strategia on Eurooppa-neuvoston vuonna 2009 hyväksymä poliittinen julistus, joka käsittelee Itämeren alueen erityispiirteitä, haasteita ja mahdollisuuksia. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on ensinnäkin selvittää miten Itämeren alueen strategia voidaan poliittisena julistuksena käsittää EU:n harjoittaman poliittisen hallinnan tuotteeksi ja välineeksi. Toisekseen tutkimus tarkastelee kyseistä strategiaa itsessään uutta poliittista tilaa rakentava avauksena. Tutkimuksen lähtökohtana on käsitys EU:sta uudenlaisena monitasoisena hallintajärjestelmänä. Kahden viimeisen vuosikymm…
Restrictions for reimbursement of interferon-free direct-acting antiviral drugs for HCV infection in Europe
2018
All-oral direct-acting antiviral drugs (DAAs) for hepatitis C virus, which have response rates of 95% or more, represent a major clinical advance. However, the high list price of DAAs has led many governments to restrict their reimbursement. We reviewed the availability of, and national criteria for, interferon-free DAA reimbursement among countries in the European Union and European Economic Area, and Switzerland. Reimbursement documentation was reviewed between Nov 18, 2016, and Aug 1, 2017. Primary outcomes were fibrosis stage, drug or alcohol use, prescriber type, and HIV co-infection restrictions. Among the 35 European countries and jurisdictions included, the most commonly reimbursed …
Coastal high-frequency radars in the Mediterranean - Part 2: Applications in support of science priorities and societal needs
2022
The Mediterranean Sea is a prominent climate-change hot spot, with many socioeconomically vital coastal areas being the most vulnerable targets for maritime safety, diverse met-ocean hazards and marine pollution. Providing an unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution at wide coastal areas, high-frequency radars (HFRs) have been steadily gaining recognition as an effective land-based remote sensing technology for continuous monitoring of the surface circulation, increasingly waves and occasionally winds. HFR measurements have boosted the thorough scientific knowledge of coastal processes, also fostering a broad range of applications, which has promoted their integration in coastal ocean …
Demographic determinants of creativity: the analysis of the development of creative potential and forecast for the Baltic states
2017
AbstractHuman capital, affected by the demographic determinants, nowadays becomes a novel driver of change and regional development. Changes in the modern economy determine the future leading role of human capital, especially its creative dimension in the development of modern, sustainable competitive advantages of countries and regions. Considering the negative demographical tendencies in the Baltic States, the aim of this paper is to analyse and forecast the development of creative potential in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Our methodology is based on the estimation of a regression model describing the relations between Global Creativity Index (GCI) and its components with the available …
