A Lost Opportunity to Parliamentarize The European Commission : Bagehot, Weber and a Debate in 1960

The article emphasizes the significance of EU studies for political thought and concepts. It deals with the seemingly technical topic of the membership of cabinet ministers in parliament. This practice arose in eighteenth-century Westminster and has been discussed since the mid-nineteenth century, Walter Bagehot's and Max Weber's writings being landmarks. When the European Parliamentary Assembly in 1960 interpreted the Treaty of Rome, it took the view, by a narrow margin, that membership of the Parliament was incompatible with membership of the Commission. The debate on the compatibility of dual membership could have been a way to promote the parliamentarization of the EU. peerReviewed

Tämän pro gradu-työn tarkoituksena oli selvittää, minkälaisia käsityksiä ja mielipiteitä ikääntyneillä on eurooppalaisuudesta, Euroopan unionista ja Suomen jäsenyydestä Euroopan unionissa. Tutkimusta varten haastateltujen henkilöiden käsitysten ja mielipiteiden avulla tarkastellaan, onko heillä havaittavissa jonkinlaista eurooppalaista identiteettiä ja miten se suhteutuu heidän kansalliseen, suomalaiseen identiteettinsä. Assessing greenhouse gas emission from waste management in EU countries

Waste management plays an important role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. The purpose of this study is to explore the economic, social and envi-ronmental factors that could significantly affect GHG emission from waste management in European Union countries. Based on the cross-section data in 2008 among European Union countries, three components (significant factors) were extracted from 12 possible factors by the principal component analysis. Also, the relation between GHG emission from waste sector and significant fac-tors was quantified through the multiple linear regression. AbstractTurunen discusses how the “European significance” of the European Heritage Label (EHL) sites has been narrated through interconnections of European values and European integration. She argues that, in the context of the EHL, integration is intricately linked to the notion of spreading common values, which in turn is entangled with Eurocentrism. Panama and the WTO: new constitutionalism of trade policy and global tax governance

"Corrigendum" in Review of International Political Economy, 24(4), p. 738 (DOI: 10.1080/09692290.2017.1332547). Tax havens and tax flight have lately received increasing attention, while interest toward multilateral trade policies has somewhat diminished. We argue that more attention needs to be paid exactly to the interrelations between trade and tax policies. Drawing from two case studies on Panama's trade disputes, we show how World Trade Organization (WTO) rules can be used both to resist attempts to sanction secrecy structures and to promote measures against tax flight.
