Life Cycle Assessment for Supporting Eco-Design: The Case Study of Sodium–Nickel Chloride Cells

2021

The European Union is moving towards a sustainable, decarbonized, and circular economy. It has identified seven key value chains in which to intervene, with the battery and vehicle value chain being one of them. Thus, actions and strategies for the sustainability of batteries need to be developed. Since Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a strategic tool for evaluating environmental sustainability, this paper investigates its application to two configurations of a sodium–nickel chloride cell (planar and tubular), focusing on the active material and the anode, with the purpose of identifying the configuration characterized by the lowest environmental impacts. The results, based on a “from cradle…

Implementation of Content and Language Integrated Learning at Schools in Latvia

2017

The European Union supports multilingualism and promotes the learning of foreign languages since their knowledge enhances understanding among peoples and increases employability. To increase the efficiency and effectiveness of foreign language education in schools, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has been promoted in Europe; this has influenced ways in which Latvia nowadays approaches bilingual education. A qualitative case study was undertaken to explore the implementation of CLIL at schools in Latvia, CLIL being seen as an element of bilingual education. This article outlines the development of CLIL in Latvia, which is largely embedded in national level policies which have…

Water needs of production of biomass for energy in Poland

2009

The paper presents the updates of Polish government policy , showing legal and financial instruments for governing the bioenergy developments. The strategy for renewable energy must be co-ordinated with the strategy of water management in a country. The water needs are given for cool climate and extensive agriculture of Central and Eastern Europe. They are a few times lower than for hotter condition of Southern Europe. Despite this the rain would be not enough for water supply of most of the energy crops.

Worldwide research output trends on drinking and driving from 1956 to 2015.

2020

This study seeks to analyze worldwide research activity on drinking and driving of macro-actors (countries and research fields) and meso-actors (institutions, journals, articles, co-substance(s) studied) during the last 6 decades (between 1956 and 2015). Web of Science and Elsevier Scopus were searched using terms referred to drinking and driving, including terms related to vehicles and way spaces. Overlapping was excluded and absence of false positives was confirmed. Articles on alcohol with/without other psychoactive substances were assessed quantitatively (bibliometric measures). Well identified by All Science Journal Classification system (ASJC) (Elsevier Scopus), an increase in the num…

Applying extracellular vesicles based therapeutics in clinical trials - an ISEV position paper.

2015

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes and microvesicles, are released by different cell types and participate in physiological and pathophysiological processes. EVs mediate intercellular communication as cell-derived extracellular signalling organelles that transmit specific information from their cell of origin to their target cells. As a result of these properties, EVs of defined cell types may serve as novel tools for various therapeutic approaches, including (a) anti-tumour therapy, (b) pathogen vaccination, (c) immune-modulatory and regenerative therapies and (d) drug delivery. The translation of EVs into clinical therapies requires the categorization of EV-based therapeutics …

Statistical Learning Algorithms to Forecast the Equity Risk Premium in the European Union

2018

With the explosion of “Big Data”, the application of statistical learning models has become popular in multiple scientific areas as well as in marketing, finance or other business disciplines. Nonetheless, there is not yet an abundant literature that covers the application of these learning algorithms to forecast the equity risk premium. In this paper we investigate whether Classification and Regression Trees (CART) algorithms and several ensemble methods, such as bagging, random forests and boosting, improve traditional parametric models to forecast the equity risk premium. In particular, we work with European Monetary Union data for a period that spans from the EMU foundation at the begin…

The border effect in Spain: The Basque Country case

2006

Gil-Pareja S., Llorca-Vivero R. and Martinez-Serrano J. A. (2006) The border effect in Spain: the Basque Country case, Regional Studies 40, 335–345. This paper investigates the border effect on the Basque Country's trade, using a sample of 28 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries between 1995 and 2001. The results indicate that after controlling for market size and distance, the Basque Country trades between 12 and 16 times more with the rest of Spain than it does with any other country. The Spanish bias is lower in the case of the Basque Country's exports than in the case of imports. With respect to the time evolution, the results show a downward trend. Th…

A Differentiated European Union

2020

Differentiation in the EU has substantially increased. It does not only refer to instances of (differentiation in) integration, but also (potential) disintegration. Differentiation can often be causally traced back to crises, yet it should not be equated with ‘crisis’. However, the literature has only scarcely discussed the putative link between crisis and differentiated integration. Fundamentally, demands for differentiation need to be treated as both a cause and an effect of integration. Thus, differentiation should be acknowledged as a persistent feature of European integration. The chapter discusses the development of differentiation in European integration and reflects upon the scholar…
