Mediterranean Borders and Diaspora
2020
“And So Europe Dehumanized Itself”, the expression used by Toni Morrison regarding slavery, seems to have returned dramatically to current affairs. We seem to have plunged into a dystopian present in which the European Union, instead of governing the disruptive global migrations through appropriate policies, has expressed such nervousness – both at the popular and institutional levels – to give rise, in an unstoppable crescendo, to practices inspired by xenophobia and racism. It has led to the inhuman treatment of migrants (I refer both to shipwrecks at sea, a real massacre and to the torture and torture reserved for them in Libya with the complicity of European governments) and finally to …
Enseignement et démocratisation : comparaison des effets sociaux des politiques de deux systèmes éducatifs, Ile Maurice, Ile de la Réunion
1999
International audience; Mauritious and Réunion are characterised by their contrasting education policies. Our research questions, form a comparative angle, not just the impact of these political choice but also the consequences of the way the two systems are run in terms of school democratisation. In order to do this, we make a point of putting in perspective the differentiated paths in school followed by pupils from a sample of schools in Mauritius and Réunion. The complementarity between quantitative and qualitative approaches makes it possible to show that the expected social effects are modulated by the behaviour strategies of the "initiated" actors. If the movement towards education fo…

EUIPO Boards of Appeal in the Light of the Principle of Fair Trial
2022
The EUIPO’s Boards of Appeal are called upon to decide on appeals against decisions by the bodies of ‘first instance’. However, their judicial function has always been denied. Conversely, the essay tends to place the Boards of Appeal of the EUIPO in any case within the concept of ‘court’, as defined by the ECtHR, within the framework of Article 6 ECtHR, because it assesses their independence, impartiality, and in general the guarantees required by the ‘fair trial’, until concluding that it is a paradigmatic model in the overall administration and judicial system. EUIPO Boards of Appeal, European Court of Human Rights, Court of Justice of the Eurpean Union, EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, …
Precarious workers' choices about unemployment insurance membership after the Ghent system reform : The Finnish experience
2019
The literature on the Ghent system has focused on the link between voluntary unemployment insurance and union membership in terms of industrial relations. Less attention has been paid to unemployment benefits and employees' decision-making concerning unemployment insurance, even though the core function of the Ghent system is to provide unemployment insurance. This paper examines both of the options that precarious workers (i.e., part-timers, temporary employees, and low-skilled service employees) choose regarding unemployment insurance membership and the change in union density after the Ghent system reform in Finland. First, the results show that the growth of the independent unemployment…
Euroscepticism of Euroenthusiastss
2016
The author of this paper differentiates between EUROscepticism and Euroscepticism. Euroscepticism is a long - time recognized and widely researched phenomenon across Europe, most generally conceptualized as a negative attitude towards the European integration process, in particular in the form of the European Union. Whereas EUROscepticism is a much narrower category which can be defined as negative attitude towards the monetary integration on a supranational level, its deepening, participation in it, etc. As an illustrative example, here in this paper, serves Poland where we can observe an interesting paradox of an extremely pro-EU attitudes of the society combined with a strong anti-EURO s…
Discrimination of astringent and deastringed hard ‘Rojo Brillante’ persimmon fruit using a sensory threshold by means of hyperspectral imaging
2019
[EN] Persimmon fruit cv. 'Rojo Brillante' is an astringent cultivar due to its content of soluble tannins, which are insolubilised during the ripening of the fruit. Traditionally, the consumption of this cultivar has only been possible when the fruit is overripe and the texture is soft. Postharvest treatments based on exposing fruits to high CO2 concentrations allow astringency removal while preserving high flesh firmness. However, the effectiveness of this treatment is controlled by means of slow destructive methods. The aim of this work is to study the application of hyperspectral imaging in the spectral range 450-1040 nm to discriminate astringent (A) and deastringed (DA) fruits non-dest…
Applying a Mixed Method Design to Evaluate Training Seminars Within an Early Childhood Education Project
2008
Abstract The body of research relating to assessment in education suggests that professional developers and seminar administrators have generally paid little attention to evaluation procedures. Scholars have also been critical of evaluations which use a single data source and have favoured the use of a multiple method design to generate a complete picture of the effectiveness of procedures under evaluation. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate two training seminars using a mixed method design. The evaluation procedure was specifically designed to utilise triangulation of sources and to follow Killion's eight-step process. The seminars were part of the ‘Early Steps’ project, a Eu…
