Opinion Statement ECJ-TF 4/2019 on the CJEU Decision of February 26, 2019, in Case C-135/17, X-GmbH, Concerning the Application of the German CFC Leg…
2019
This article deals with case, X-GmbH (Case C-135/17) concerning the compatibility of German CFC legislation with regard to third countries. In Germany, CFC legislation only applies in cross-border situations and not in purely domestic situations. In general, the application of CFC legislation requires that the shareholders have control over the foreign subsidiary, that the foreign subsidiary be taxed at a lower rate and that it earn passive income. Concerning a special type of passive income, there is even no control requirement. In relation to other EU and EEA countries, Germany does not apply its CFC legislation if the taxpayer proves that the company carries on a genuine economic activit…
Genetic Diversity in Latvian Spring Barley Association Mapping Population
2012
Certified organic crop area is continuously increasing in European Union and in Latvia (Eurostat data), despite somewhat lower yield and higher potential for disease damage in organic farming. It is increasingly recognized that breeding varieties for organic farming requires focus on specific traits that may be less important under conventional agriculture. Molecular markers are becoming essential tools for plant breeding allowing reducing time and cost of development of new varieties by early selection of progeny with desired traits. However, there is lack of information on molecular markers for traits that may be important for organic farming, such as plant morphological traits ensuring c…
A comprehensive fracture prevention strategy in older adults : The European union geriatric medicine society (EUGMS) statement
2016
Published also in Aging Clinical and Experimental Research, Vol.28, No.4, WOS: 000379034800030 Prevention of fragility fractures in older people has become a public health priority, although the most appropriate and cost-effective strategy remains unclear. In the present statement, the Interest group on falls and fracture prevention of the European union geriatric medicine society (EUGMS), in collaboration with the International association of gerontology and geriatrics for the European region (IAGG-ER), the European union of medical specialists (EUMS), the Fragility fracture network (FFN), the International osteoporosis foundation (IOF) - European society for clinical and economic aspects …
Global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for 306 diseases and injuries and healthy life expectancy (HALE) for 188 countr…
2015
Summary Background The Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 (GBD 2013) aims to bring together all available epidemiological data using a coherent measurement framework, standardised estimation methods, and transparent data sources to enable comparisons of health loss over time and across causes, age–sex groups, and countries. The GBD can be used to generate summary measures such as disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE) that make possible comparative assessments of broad epidemiological patterns across countries and time. These summary measures can also be used to quantify the component of variation in epidemiology that is related to sociodemographic develo…
Understanding frailty: meanings and beliefs about screening and prevention across key stakeholder groups in Europe
2017
ABSTRACTInnovative methods to manage frailty are critical to managing the needs of an ageing population. Evidence suggests there are opportunities to reverse or prevent frailty through early intervention. However, little is known about older adults’, families’ and practitioners’ beliefs about the malleability of frailty. This study examined European stakeholders’ accounts of the acceptability and feasibility of frailty screening and prevention to inform future intervention development. Semi-structured focus groups and individual interviews were conducted in three European Union countries (Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom) with key stakeholders – frail and non-frail older adults, family …
Towards a European Health Monitoring System
2003
The relationships between physical activity (PA) and a wide variety of health and well-being outcomes have been well established in the last decade. Regular PA reduces the risk of premature death and disability from many medical conditions, including coronary heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, and osteoporosis. There is also evidence for a positive relationship with well-being, particularly in alleviating depression and anxiety. Reduction of the large public health burden associated with a sedentary lifestyle has become a priority in many countries and is endorsed by the World Health Organization.
Glochidial infection by the endangered Margaritifera margaritifera (Mollusca) increased survival of salmonid host (Pisces) during experimental Flavob…
2021
AbstractCo-infections are common in host-parasite interactions, but studies about their impact on the virulence of parasites/diseases are still scarce. The present study compared mortality induced by a fatal bacterial pathogen, Flavobacterium columnare between brown trout infected with glochidia from the endangered freshwater pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera, and uninfected control fish during the parasitic period and after the parasitic period (i.e. glochidia detached) in a laboratory experiment. We hypothesised that glochidial infection would increase host susceptibility to and/or pathogenicity of the bacterial infection. We found that the highly virulent strain of F. columnare c…
Giochi, Scommesse e Responsabilità Penale
2008
The Local versus Global Dilemma of the Effects of Structural Funds
2011
This paper extends the analysis by Dall'erba and Le Gallo dealing with the impact of structural funds on the growth process of European regions. Like most of the other 18 contributions assessing the efficiency of structural funds, our article was based on a global model of b-convergence: one coefficient pertaining to the structural funds variable was estimated for the whole sample. In this paper, we extend this approach by performing local estimations, where one coefficient is estimated for each region, so that the impact of structural funds can be regionally differentiated. As in the previous contribution, the presence of spatial spillover effects is taken into account using spatial econom…
