Abstract This study addresses the crucial relationship between theory and practice as a key feature of professional learning in initial teacher education. The context for the study is an EU-funded intensive programme drawing on different dimensions of insideness and outsideness and arts-based pedagogies in response to the diversity of education today. The data for the study comes from self-selected pages from preservice teacher participants’ reflective sketchbooks. As a methodological approach that unifies the sensuous and cognitive this study suggests that reflective sketchbooks document the dialogic encounters of students whilst also providing a material space that can itself become a for…

Homotypic Protection Against Rotavirus-Induced Diarrhea in Infant Mice Breast-Fed by Dams Immunized with the Recombinant VP8* Subunit of the VP4 Caps…

2000

The outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7 induce neutralizing antibody against rotavirus. We have investigated in a mouse model the protection mediated by immunization with VP8*, the amino-terminal tryptic fragment of VP4. BALB/c female mice immunized with simian rotavirus SA11 VP6 and VP8* proteins expressed in Escherichia coli were mated with seronegative males. Litters were orally challenged with the SA11 strain (P5B[2], G3) or with the murine rotavirus strain EDIM (P10[16], G3) to verify the degree of protection against diarrhea induced in the newborns. Only those pups born to dams immunized with VP8* did not develop diarrhea after having been orally challenged with the SA11 strain. Pups bo…

Libertà di circolazione, divieto di discriminazioni fondate sulla nazionalità e norme sportive sulla cittadinanza

2018

This paper investigates the right of movement and residence of persons in the European Community and the prohibition of discrimination based on nationality, also in the framework of the relations between community law and sports law. In this perspective, after preliminary analysis of the european and domestic rules referred to the above mentioned right of movement, attention will be held to the important topic of Welfare tourism. The investigation proceeds with the examination of the “Sporting Exception” which allows that european rules on right of movement and prohibition of discrimination based on nationality yeld before the international and State’s sport technical rules.

Terrorism'S Fear : Perceived Personal And National Threats

2008

Terrorism represents an unexpected and unwanted change which challenges one-s social identity. We carried out a study to explore the demographic variables- role on the perception of personal and national threat, and to investigate the effects of perceived terrorist threat on people-s ways of life, moods, opinions and hopes. 313 residents of Palermo (Italy) were interviewed. The results pointed out that the fear of terrorism affects three areas: the cognitive, the emotional and the behavioural one.

Computing generators of the tame kernel of a global function field

2006

Abstract The group K 2 of a curve C over a finite field is equal to the tame kernel of the corresponding function field. We describe two algorithms for computing generators of the tame kernel of a global function field. The first algorithm uses the transfer map and the fact that the l -torsion can easily be described if the ground field contains the l th roots of unity. The second method is inspired by an algorithm of Belabas and Gangl for computing generators of K 2 of the ring of integers in a number field. We finally give the generators of the tame kernel for some elliptic function fields.

Influenza control in the 21st century: Optimizing protection of older adults

2009

Older adults (> or =65 years of age) are particularly vulnerable to influenza illness. This is due to a waning immune system that reduces their ability to respond to infection, which leads to more severe cases of disease. The majority ( approximately 90%) of influenza-related deaths occur in older adults and, in addition, catastrophic disability resulting from influenza-related hospitalization represents a significant burden in this vulnerable population. Current influenza vaccines provide benefits for older adults against influenza; however, vaccine effectiveness is lower than in younger adults. In addition, antigenic drift is also a concern, as it can impact on vaccine effectiveness due t…

On the Quest for Defining Organisational Plasticity: A Community Modelling Experiment

2020

PurposeThis viewpoint article is concerned with an attempt to advance organisational plasticity (OP) modelling concepts by using a novel community modelling framework (PhiloLab) from the social simulation community to drive the process of idea generation. In addition, the authors want to feed back their experience with PhiloLab as they believe that this way of idea generation could also be of interest to the wider evidence-based human resource management (EBHRM) community.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used some workshop sessions to brainstorm new conceptual ideas in a structured and efficient way with a multidisciplinary group of 14 (mainly academic) participants using PhiloLab. Th…

An Integrated System for Efficient Management of Distribution Networks: The System's Architecture and the Telecommunication Infrastructure

2006

Modern distribution systems must keep up with high power quality standards due to the new regulations of the European Community and of the different national legislations. Efficient faults management is one of the basic tasks utilities must accomplish and this objective can be attained if and only if automation is present and efficient diagnostic procedures have been implemented in the centralized or distributed units all over the network. In this paper, the architecture of an integrated system for management of modern distribution systems is presented. The system includes routines for normal on-line optimal operation of distribution systems and for outage management, the latter including f…

Community composition of soil microarthropods of acid forest soils as affected by wood ash application

2002

Summary The responses of soil microarthropod communities of acid forest soils to wood ash-application was studied both in a sixty years old pine forest stand (wood ash dose: 3000kg ha —1 ) and in laboratory microcosms (wood ash dose: 5000kg ha —1 ). We also tested whether microarthropod communities stressed with wood ash were more sensitive to an additional disturbance, drought, than the microarthropod communities in the ash-free soil. Microarthropods were sampled five times during the field experiment and four times during the laboratory experiment. At each sampling the abundance and community structure of microarthropods were analysed. In the field the number of collembolans, and in the l…
