Designing for Networked Community Resilience
2016
Abstract Communities have been described to be at the heart of the preparedness for and the response to disasters. The increasing connectedness has made communities more vulnerable for their dependence on a complex network of critical infrastructures. At the same time, this very connectedness has the potential to enable communities to self-organise, engage, and connect with other communities to improve their resilience. While the pathway to more resilience is promising and has many advocates, the response to crises and disasters, time and again reveals the challenges related to (i) ad-hoc switching from preparedness to response; (ii) ad-hoc connecting professional responders, communities, v…
Sliding mode torque control of an induction motor for automotive application with sliding mode flux observer
2016
In this paper, the performance of two control systems of induction motors for automotive applications were compared in order to highlight the differences in terms of response speed, robustness and noise immunity. The first system is realized through a field-oriented control with PI controllers, while the second system is realized through a field-oriented control with Sliding Mode Controllers. Both controls are designed to follow the torque references as required for the vehicles and are tested with typical load profiles of vehicles. It also designed a sliding mode observer flux.
The TurningPoint application as a transformational learning tool in educational processes
2016
The educational convergence project driven by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) has created new teaching methods and evaluation processes in university education systems. This new pedagogical approach generates an unquestionable opportunity for different segments of the university community see ICTs as an essential tool of the procedure of educational content development, which facilitate the teaching-learning process. This article presents the TurningPoint tool, which focuses on promoting teacher-student interactions, facilitating participation and ongoing assessment. This tool has advantages over other existing applications because of its variety of utilities and potential use. Mo…
Virtual Instruments: Uncertainty Evaluation in the Presence of Electromagnetic Interferences
2007
The electromagnetic interferences can influence the performances of a virtual instrument; consequently, in a generic measurement performed by using these instruments, the related uncertainty values can increase. In the paper, we report the results of various experimental tests performed with the aim to check if and how the radiated and/or conducted disturbances affect the instruments' characteristics and, in particular, the single uncertainty sources. Starting from these results and applying an already proposed method for the uncertainty estimation in the measurements performed by means of virtual instruments, it is possible to take into account and to evaluate the contribute of the electro…
Impact of industrial environments on the PC-based measurements
2007
In the paper we present a simple and fast procedure to evaluate the impact of the electromagnetic disturbances, which can be present in the industrial locations, on the measurements performed by a generic PC-based measurement instrument. The method is conceived starting from the data obtained by subjecting the instruments to the disturbances prescribed by the IEC-61326 standard. The results show that, even under heavy disturbances, the common good practices of shielding and grounding allow a correct employment of this kind of instrumentation.
The Development of Linguistic Competences for Employability: A Training Project for Teachers
2014
Abstract Employability is a new concept that has just appeared in the Spanish educational system. Its rising importance is due to European Union educational policies which aim to provide young people with training that enables them to take part successfully in the present and future working world. This paper argues for the need to develop employability from the very start of formal education, and within this, we highlight the importance of developing linguistic competence among pre-school and primary pupils as a key element for favouring employability. To be able to do so, the teaching staff must be trained using quality education to enable them to work effectively on this competence. In th…
Determinants and Stakeholders Influencing Children's Road Safety Education
2016
Road safety education is, widely, the best base and the greatest assurance of the future in terms of road safety prevention and promotion. Nowadays, RSE constitutes one of the main growing concerns in terms of complimentary education in many countries, taking into account, among other factors, the high rates of accidents that affect the health and welfare of childhood and adolescence. Furthermore, it is a necessity for the community health to create, train, encourage and lead positives attitudes for good road safety education. The general objective of this study was to describe the factors and stakeholders that have influence on the learning of road safety education and safe behaviors of ch…
Entrepreneurship of an institutional field: the emergence of coworking spaces for digital business model
2020
AbstractCoworking spaces have been proliferating world-wide in urban and rural areas while facilitating entrepreneurship and new, especially digital business models. Our research analyzes the worldwide expansion by drawing upon mechanisms from institutional theory. We argue that the sense of community, emotional activation, the local communities together with the digital linkages and the open office allowed coworking spaces to evolve as a real space for entrepreneurship. The common lifestyle and the high digital identity of the users further explain the emergence of this entrepreneurship field that shows high convergent forms of coworking spaces. The key divergence comes with different owne…
Discovering and creating business opportunities for cloud services
2016
This study focuses on how the opportunities for cloud services are detected. The study develops a framework to detect and exploit cloud-based opportunities. This study incorporates entrepreneurship theories to extend and enrich IS research. Cloud computing provides new business opportunities for firms selling or using cloud services. However, little is known about how software firms detect and exploit these opportunities. Based on in-depth qualitative case studies, this study identified two different pathways followed by software firms when they detect and exploit opportunities. In the first pathway, the opportunity is based on an existing problem and need in the market. In the case firms, th…
