Balancing Flexibility and Coherence: Information Exchange in a Paper Machinery Project
1999
The problem of balancing coherence and flexibility in collaborative information system design is approached here with two pairs of concepts. Boundary objects can support communication for perspective taking between communities of practice. Conscripting devices can support communication for perspective making within a community of practice. These theoretical lenses are used to study the uses of the technical specification in paper machine projects. Our study showed that as a boundary object it provided enough flexibility to allow negotiations, and sufficient local structure, for carrying out work in both communities of practice, the customer and the manufacturer. As a conscription device in …
The Discursive Constitution of a World-Spanning Region and the Role of Empty Signifiers: The Case of Francophonia
2007
The cultural turn in political science, history, and political geography has opened new perspectives on the division of the world into geographic entities. Nation-states, regions, districts, etc., are no longer qualified as quasi-natural objects based upon intrinsic qualities but, rather, as contingent results of social or accordingly discursive processes. The Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) defines Francophonia as an “geocultural space” (espace geoculturel) and an international community of more than 50 states. In this contribution, the concept of political communities as “imagined communities” and the advancements of discourse theory by Laclau and Mouffe are used in o…
Noves dades per a la flora valenciana
2014
Es dóna notícia de la troballa d’algunes localitats noves de plantes amb valor corològic per a la flora dela Comunitat Valenciana, destacant Armeria trachyphylla Lange com a novetat per a la flora valenciana.Mots clau: Comunitat Valenciana, corologia, Espanya, plantes vasculars.New data to the valencian flora.Data about some new localities of plants with chorological interest for the valencian flora are reported, highlighting Armeria trachyphylla Lange as a new species for the valencian list.
Dynamic Community Discovery Method Based on Phylogenetic Planted Partition in Temporal Networks
2022
As most of the community discovery methods are researched by static thought, some community discovery algorithms cannot represent the whole dynamic network change process efficiently. This paper proposes a novel dynamic community discovery method (Phylogenetic Planted Partition Model, PPPM) for phylogenetic evolution. Firstly, the time dimension is introduced into the typical migration partition model, and all states are treated as variables, and the observation equation is constructed. Secondly, this paper takes the observation equation of the whole dynamic social network as the constraint between variables and the error function. Then, the quadratic form of the error function is minimized…
The Contribution of Family Business Groups to the Local Innovation Environment
2018
Family firms and family business groups and their role in the local business community are largely unexplored territory in the field of family business as well in the field of regional innovation systems. The focus of this chapter is in regional innovation system and particularly in how family firms and family business groups are embedded in this system. The main research question is what is the role of family business groups for the regional innovation system? The present study is also among the first to analyse the intellectual property rights (IPRs) filing activity by family business groups. Descriptive empirical analysis indicates that family business groups are among the top regional i…
Evaluation of a technical revegetation action performed on foredunes at Devesa de la Albufera, Valencia, Spain
2010
We have evaluated the level of restoration achieved by a technical revegetation action carried out on reconstructed foredunes at the Devesa de la Albufera and compared this level with that achieved by spontaneous succession. Foredunes 1, 3, 6 and 20 y old since revegetated (1, 3, 6 and 20 y, respectively) were considered as spatially separated stages representing a successional trend in the development of the restored plant community. Lower and similar levels of diversity (richness and H´ and Pielou´s indexes) and coverage, respectively, were found on dunes corresponding to the oldest stage of technical revegetation compared with that of the reference site. Diversity and coverage parameters…
Laboratory design to simulate complexity of forest floor for studying the role of fauna in the soil processes
1990
We developed a technique for simulating the complexity of the soil system under controlled laboratory conditions. Removable microcosms were inserted in a homogeneous substrate soil in a large plastic box. This macrocosm was sealed, except for an inlet and outlet for air flow, and an aperture for collecting leachates. The system can be designed and manipulated in various ways according to the needs of a particular experiment. Respiration and nutrient fluxes can be measured either from the whole macrocosm or separately from the microcosms. We have performed three experiments in order to evaluate the role of animals in the soil processes. A set of macrocosms was constructed from components of …
Forest types for biodiversity assessment at regional level: the case study of Sicily (Italy)
2007
Within Europe the question of plant coenosis is attracting growing interest. The quality and quantity of collected information on forest resources at a global level largely depends on the capacity to collect and analyse data at national and sub-national scale in a way compatible with those at global or continental levels. In Italy the acceptance of all the international agreements and protocols on the protection of the environment and management of natural resources, requires a standardization of collected information and statistics, with the aim to produce homogeneous and integrative data at global level. This need is reflected in the following points: (1) the adoption of a classification …
‘Independence is not given, it is taken’: the Ivorian cinquantenaire and competing history/ies of independence
2013
This article explores competing histories of independence in Cote d'Ivoire. The 2010 commemoration of fifty years of independence led to competing histories about how and if the nation achieved independence in 1960. The postelectoral crisis of 2010–2011 that followed soon afterwards has been interpreted by supporters of the outgoing president Laurent Gbagbo as an attempt by France and the international community to re-colonise Cote d'Ivoire. The article asks how different versions of this history are connected to different political projects and how they have changed through time. The article will analyse these processes of meaning-making in a historiology of Ivorian independence, thus cont…
Social Movements, Voluntary Associations and Cycles of Protest in Finland 1905-91
1992
During the 20th century five cycles of protest have emerged in Finland: 1905-18, 1928-32, 1944-48, 1966-76, and the continuing cycle of new social movements beginning around the end of the 1970s. This article begins with an examination of the differences and similarities in the formation of these cycles against the background of antecedent political opportunity structures. The question of the relationship between social protest movements and formal voluntary associations is then addressed. It is shown that social movements and formal voluntary associations have been interactive, mutually reinforcing ways of reacting to different manifestations of social crisis. Existing formal associations …
