Echinostoma caproni: kinetics of IgM, IgA and IgG subclasses in the serum and intestine of experimentally infected rats and mice.

The kinetics of specific immunoglobulin M, A and IgG subclasses against Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) were analyzed in serum and intestinal fluid of two host species (Wistar rats and ICR mice) in which the course of the infection markedly differs. In rats, the worms were rapidly expelled, whereas E. caproni evokes in mice long-lasting infection. The pattern of antibody responses in both serum and intestinal samples was different in each host species. Serum responses in mice were characterized by significant increases of IgM, IgA, total IgG, IgG1 and IgG3, but not IgG2a. Accumulation of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) in the liver of patients with renal failure and portal hypertension

Summary Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) has gained wide clinical acceptance as a colloidal plasma substitute. We were able to study the liver biopsies of two patients with renal failure who developed ascites after repeated infusions of HES. All types of liver cells displayed massive accumulation of HES with the morphologic resemblance to a storage disease. These changes could be distinguished clearly from the lesions of a hereditary disorder by light and electron microscopy. Although it is difficult to establish a causative role for HES in the development of ascites on the bases of morphological changes alone, one should be cautious about giving HES to patients with renal failure until exact data…

Objective: To identify, among Mexican teenagers from public and private schools, the frequency, severity of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs, and their possible association with temporomandibular joint disorders. The clinical effect of bacteremia on outcomes in urinary tract infection (UTI) is still debated. This study aims to examine the clinical effect of bacteremia in elderly patients with UTI requiring hospital admission.This retrospective observational study recorded the clinical features, microbiology and outcomes in a Spanish cohort of patients aged ≥65 years hospitalized for UTI in whom blood cultures were performed in the emergency department. COVID-19 in people living with HIV: Clinical implications of dynamics of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2.

ABSTRACT Background Little evidence on COVID‐19 in people living with HIV (PLWH) is currently available. Material and Methods We reported clinical and viro‐immunological data of all HIV‐positive patients admitted to our centre with COVID‐19 from March 1 to May 12,2020. Results Overall, five patients were included: all were virologically‐suppressed on antiretroviral therapy and CD4+ count was >350 cell/mm3 in all but two patients. Although all patients had evidence of pneumonia on admission, only one developed respiratory failure.
