The SCIA Questionnaire: standards for communities for children and adolescents – a tool for the evaluation of good practices

2019

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the Italian validation of the standards for communities for children and adolescents (SCIA) Questionnaire, an evaluation tool of communities quality standards, based on the “Service Standards for Therapeutic Communities for Children and Young People – 2nd edition” of the Community of Communities (2009), that enables an empirical, multidimensional and complex evaluation of the therapeutic community (TC) “system”. It is a self-report that sets out and measures variables that allow to get an overview of organisational models and the possible development areas to improve the effectiveness of the protection of child and adolescents in community tr…

Lung Ultrasonography – A Paraclinical Investigation Promoter in Community-Acquired Pneumonia Diagnosis in Children

2019

Abstract Lung ultrasonography is an excellent alternative to chest radiography, with better sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values and, finally, with better accuracy. The lung ultrasonography is proven to be useful in trying to reduce the request of chest radiography. In the opinion of most specialists, lung ultrasonography is recommended to be a valuable tool for the diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia in children. Considering the fact that clinical examination remains essential because it suspects the diagnosis, the evolution does not require radiologic follow-up, also the pathologic findings at the clinical examination may change over the course of a day,…

Thymoma and paraneoplastic myasthenia gravis

2010

Paraneoplastic autoimmune diseases associate occasionally with small cell lung cancers and gynecologic tumors. However, myasthenia gravis (MG) occurs in at least 30% of all patients with thymomas (usually present at MG diagnosis). These epithelial neoplasms almost always have numerous admixed maturing polyclonal T cells (thymocytes). This thymopoiesis-and export of mature CD4(+)T cells-particularly associates with MG, though there are rare/puzzling exceptions in apparently pure epithelial WHO type A thymomas. Other features potentially leading to inefficient self-tolerance induction include defective epithelial expression of the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene and/or of major histocompatib…

OR18-01 Effect of Teprotumumab on Proptosis Reduction Across Various Demographic Sub-Groups

2020

Abstract Introduction: Teprotumumab, an insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor inhibitory monoclonal antibody, was recently shown to significantly reduce proptosis in patients with active, moderate-to-severe thyroid eye disease (TED) in phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials.1,2 Prior analyses have demonstrated a combined trial proptosis response (≥2 mm reduction) rate of 77.4% in the teprotumumab group and 14.9% in the placebo group after 24 weeks of therapy (p < 0.001).3 The current analysis was performed to investigate whether or not patient demographic characteristics influence the teprotumumab proptosis response. Methods: Data from two 24-week randomized, double-masked, placebo-cont…

Anti-fetal immune response mechanisms may be involved in the pathogenesis of placental abruption

2003

Placental abruption is an unpredictable severe complication in pregnancy. In order to investigate the possibility that the activation of the fetal nonadaptive immune system may be involved in the pathogenesis of this disease, IL-6 release from cord blood monocytes was examined by intracellular cytokine staining and flow cytometric analysis. Our results demonstrate that preterm placental abruption (n = 15) in contrast to uncontrollable preterm labor (n = 33) is associated with significantly (P < 0.001) increased release of IL-6 from the fetal monocytes. The same holds true for rhesus disease (n = 9, P < 0.001) that is characterized by a maternal production of antibodies against the rhesus-D …

Spatial and temporal structure of the trematode component community inValvata macrostoma(Gastropoda, Prosobranchia)

2008

SUMMARYWe conducted the first comprehensive study on the spatiotemporal structure of trematode communities in the large-mouthed valve snail,Valvata macrostoma. A total of 1103 snails were examined monthly between May and October 2007 from Lake Konnevesi, Central Finland, from a shallow (1–2 m deep) and an offshore site (5–6 m deep), located ca. 50–70 m apart. Snails were infected by 10 trematode species. The species composition and prevalence were strikingly different between the sites with high species diversity in the shallow site (all 10 species; total prevalence of sporocysts/rediae 12·1%, metacercariae 55·4%) compared to the deeper site (3 species; prevalence 15·0% and 1·9%, respective…

Trends over Time in Dental Caries status in Urban and Rural Thai Children.

2017

Background Historically, the prevalence of dental caries was higher in urban areas than rural areas of Thailand. This study aim to examine the time trends in caries status in children in Thailand. Material and Methods Linear regression was used to examine trend of dental caries prevalence and mean number of teeth with caries, filled and missing due to caries (dmft/DMFT) in urban and rural, of 3-, 5-6 and 12-year olds from seven Thailand National Oral Health Surveys conducted approximately every 5 years from 1977 to 2012. Results There were declines in the caries prevalence and mean dmft/DMFT in every age group. Significant results were observed in the mean dmft of 3 year-olds and the mean D…

Relative role of fish vs. starfish predation in controlling sea urchin populations in Mediterranean rocky shores

2009

In the Mediterranean, fishing bans generally allow the recovery of populations of sea urchin predators, such as the seabreams Diplodus sargus and D. vulgaris, promoting the transformation of overgrazed communities into ones dominated by erect macroalgae. However, in the marine reserve on Ustica Island (SW Italy) the opposite trend has occurred in the upper infralittoral community, and urchin barrens formed after the cessation of fishing activities. We hypothesized that (1) the natural scarcity of the 2 seabream species leads to a low predation rate on sea urchins at Ustica, and (2) predation rate varies with depth, due to differences in the predator assemblages. Tethering experiments were c…

Comparison of neophyte communities of Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Acer negundo L. in the eastern Baltic Sea region cities of Riga and Kaunas

2015

Abstract In this study, we examined the species composition of neophyte communities of Robinia pseudoacacia and Acer negundo and compared the site conditions of the urban environment of two cities—Riga and Kaunas. Eighty-five plots of A. negundo and R. pseudoacacia communities were selected. Within each plot, all of the vascular plant species were recorded, and their abundance was estimated in 2014. Composite soil samples of the 0–10 cm mineral topsoil were collected for the estimation of the soil chemical properties at nine systematically distributed points in each sample plot. The soil pH KCL , exchangeable bases, total nitrogen, total organic matter, C/N ratio, and concentrations of the …
