Community structure and the evolution of aposematic coloration
2002
Studies on the evolution of aposematic coloration (prey coloration advertising for unpalatability) have mainly focused on predator psychology in simplified single-prey species systems. We chose, instead, to model population dynamics on the community level. We studied the invasion by an aposematic phenotype in the presence and absence of another prey species. The single-prey and two-prey models differed in two major ways. First, with two prey species the invasion was possible only with a weak aposematic signal, whereas with a single prey species there was no such an upper limit for signal strength. Second, with a single prey species, increase of the aposematic phenotype always resulted in ra…
A T-bet gradient controls the fate and function of CCR6−RORγt+ innate lymphoid cells
2013
At mucosal surfaces, the immune system should not initiate inflammatory immune responses to the plethora of antigens constantly present in the environment, but should remain poised to unleash a potent assault on intestinal pathogens. The transcriptional programs and regulatory factors required for immune cells to switch from homeostatic (often tissue-protective) function to potent antimicrobial immunity are poorly defined. Mucosal retinoic-acid-receptor-related orphan receptor-γt-positive (RORγt(+)) innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are emerging as an important innate lymphocyte population required for immunity to intestinal infections. Various subsets of RORγt(+) ILCs have been described but th…

O início de uma nova era: teste sistemático para patógenos causadores de infecções agudas das vias aéreas superiores (IVAS) em crianças
2007
On average humans get sick ten times per year. About six times the illness is due to an acute respiratory tract infection (ARI). Morbidity is especially high in children since they usually encounter the offending organism for the first time in their life; the lack of immunity results in shedding of the offending organisms in high numbers of prolonged time as compared to adults; their airways are smaller than those of adults and thus the inflammatory response leads to a more significant narrowing of the airways resulting in more severe disease; on average they have a high number of social contacts and also a more intimate contact with peers and caregivers alike resulting in a higher attack r…
A Cross-sectional Growth Study of Forearm Length and Tibial Length in an Indigenous Andean Population of 6 to 19 Years of Age.
1997
Patterns of growth in forearm length and tibial length were studied in 149 school-children of Aymara ancestry (73 boys and 76 girls), aged 6 to 19 years. The investigation was based on a cross-sectional survey performed in 1987 in the rural community of Putre (3, 530 m), northern Chile. The results show that there is little sexual dimorphism over the age period of 6 to 13 years, while sex differences are more pronounced between the ages of 14 and 17 years, both for forearm length and tibial length, with boys having higher means. Correspondingly, the maximum values achieved for both measurements are greater in boys than in girls. The growth spurt begins about two years earlier in girls than …
Integrated longitudinal immunophenotypic, transcriptional, and repertoire analyses delineate immune responses in patients with COVID-19
2021
To understand how a protective immune response against SARS-CoV-2 develops over time, we integrated phenotypic, transcriptional and repertoire analyses on PBMCs from mild and severe COVID-19 patients during and after infection, and compared them to healthy donors (HD). A type I IFN-response signature marked all the immune populations from severe patients during the infection. Humoral immunity was dominated by IgG production primarily against the RBD and N proteins, with neutralizing antibody titers increasing post infection and with disease severity. Memory B cells, including an atypical FCRL5+ T-BET+ memory subset, increased during the infection, especially in patients with mild disease. A…
Temporal Distribution of Gastropods In Rocky Intertidal Area In North Manokwari, West Papua
2019
Gastropods is an important organism that commonly found inhabiting the rocky intertidal area. Distribution pattern of this species is influenced by various factors such as population history, microhabitat, predation and a complex interactions between oceanographic dynamics and ecological features. This study aims to compare the temporal distribution pattern of gastropods at two different rocky intertidal area. This research was conducted at the rocky intertidal area of Amban and Nuni, North Manokwari District, West Papua. Data collection was performed during the daylight and night in April and June 2012 using systematic sampling method. The results showed that both physical and chemical fac…
Novel COVID-19 Intersections with Dentistry: Approaches to protection
2021
Background: COVID-19 outbreak brought many challenges to the society and to health care systems Health care professionals in dental practices are a high-risk population, due to close contact to saliva and aerosols Specific guidance for those professionals is essential to control disease transmission and guarantee dentist's health Material and Methods: We performed a literature review based on online search in Pubmed, Scientific Electronic Library, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciencias da Saude and Scopus databases Included articles were fully read and analysed regarding infection control measurements, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), conditions for procedures and us…
Partnership for training. Parents, teachers and leaders: the educating community
2021
Family and school are the educational agencies that play a primary role in the child development. Therefore, an educational partnership based on values and responsibilities sharing and on the mutual respect of competences is necessary. This idea is reflected in Bronfenbrenner (1979; 2001), Epstein (2018), Eccles and Harold (2013) theoretical/methodological models and in the Pati (2019) pedagogical-epistemic reflection. Starting from this theoretical framework, it is considered necessary to investigate the point of view of teachers, parents and managers in order to provide a clear vision of the practices of educational co-responsibility in reference to the Italian school context. We predicte…
Ricerca com-partecipata e sperimentazione didattica in campo educativo
2022
