On the group of the automorphisms of some algebraic systems

Within a framework of general algebra we firstly formulate a proposition on the group of the automorphisms of some irreducible algebrae (id est algebrae without proper non trivial subalgebrae). This proposition includes as particular cases the uniqueness of the automorphisms of the rational field and the Burnside theorem on the commutant of an irreducible set of operators of a finite dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field. Afterwards we apply the general proposition to modules with irreducible sets of semilinear operators and we obtain a theorem which generalises from several points of view the Burnside theorem. On Inductive Generalization in Monadic First-Order Logic With Identity

Publisher Summary The chapter examines the results obtained by means of a system when the relation of identity is used in addition to monadic predicates. The chapter compares the new system of inductive logic sketched by Jaakko Hintikka with Carnap's system. The main advantage of Hintikka's system is that it gives natural degrees of confirmation to inductive generalizations, whereas Carnap's confirmation function c * enables one to deal satisfactorily with singular inductive inference only. Banach elements and spectrum in Banach quasi *-algebras

A normal Banach quasi -algebra (X;A_0) has a distinguished Banach - algebra X_b consisting of bounded elements of X. The latter -algebra is shown to coincide with the set of elements of X having fi nite spectral radius. If the family P(X) of bounded invariant positive sesquilinear forms on X contains suffi ciently many elements then the Banach -algebra of bounded elements can be characterized via a C -seminorm defi ned by the elements of P(X).

Star representations of E(2)

We give a complete and explicit realization of the unitary irreducible representations of the universal covering group G of E(2), the Euclidean group in two dimensions, by deformation of the algebra of functions on the dual g* of the Lie algebra of G. We define an adapted Fourier transform for G which gives a natural description of the harmonic analysis of G.

A Teaching proposal for the study of eigenvectors and eigenvalues

[EN] In this work, we present a teaching proposal which emphasizes on visualization and physical applications in the study of eigenvectors and eigenvalues. These concepts are introduced using the notion of the moment of inertia of a rigid body and the GeoGebra software. The proposal was motivated after observing students¿ difficulties when treating eigenvectors and eigenvalues from a geometric point of view. It was designed following a particular sequence of activities with the schema: exploration, introduction of concepts, structuring of knowledge and application, and considering the three worlds of mathematical thinking provided by Tall: embodied, symbolic and formal.
