Modular megaprosthesis reconstruction for oncological and non-oncological resection of the elbow joint

Abstract Background Reconstruction of large bone defects around the elbow joint is surgically demanding due to sparse soft tissue coverage, complex biomechanics and the close proximity to neurovascular structures. Modular megaprostheses are established reconstruction tools for the elbow, but only small case series have been reported in the literature. Methods Thirty-six patients who underwent reconstruction of the elbow joint with a modular megaprosthesis were reviewed retrospectively. In 31 patients (86.1%), elbow replacement was performed after resection of a bone tumour, whereas five non-oncological patients (13.9%) underwent surgery because of a previous failed elbow reconstruction. Total retinal detachment caused by a KIF11 mutation.

Purpose This is a case report of bilateral retinal detachment associated with KIF11 mutation. Methods In our university hospital, an 8-week-old patient presented with a potential bilateral congenital cataract, iris atrophy, and iridocorneal contact in the left eye. An examination revealed microcephaly and edema of the dorsa of the feet. The eye examination showed a clear lens in both eyes with a dislodged anterior chamber in the left eye with vessels drawn from the iris to the lens. A retrolental white bilateral mass with vessels was also observed. The MRI and the ultrasound revealed a potential peritoneal hyperplastic glass body. Purpose To assess the differences that exist between two intramedullary osteosynthesis systems for the treatment of unstable proximal femoral fractures in an attempt to find out whether the use of an antirotation screw improves the final result. Congenital intracranial tumors

Tumors that are diagnosed already at birth or during the first or second week of life are called congenital tumors. They represent a special challenge to pediatric oncologists and to surgeons, and are relatively rare. From 1956 to August 1983 in the Pediatric Department of the University Hospital of Mainz, 1.027 children with tumors were observed and treated, 16 of them with congenital tumors. Among 479 tumor patients from 1956 to 1972 there was only one child with a congenital tumor; but from 1973 to 1983 there were 15 cases. Possibly, the absolute number of congenital tumors is increasing!
