High school students' perspective to university CS1

This paper presents a qualitative study of a school-university collaborative project where a game-themed CS1 course was offered as-is to high school students. Our specific interest was to explore the students' experiences with the university level course. Our analyses indicate that immediate and regular support was highly important for student performance, as support of this kind could mitigate issues related to students' orientation towards the high workload of the course. Students who showed academic interest were likely to pass, whereas students lacking self-direction or work efficiency were likely to drop out. Equal access to the top? Measuring selection into finnish academia

In this article, we draw a parallel between equality of opportunity in educational transitions and equality of opportunity in academic careers. In both cases, many methodological problems can be ameliorated by the use of longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data. We illustrate this point by using Finnish full-population register data to follow the educational and academic careers of the 1964–1966 birth cohorts from birth to the present day. We show how the Finnish professoriate is highly selected both in terms of parental background and in terms of gender. A study of transitions in an undergraduate mathematics program

International audience; In this paper, we introduce an in-progress study of the transitions students face as they advance in their mathematics courses. Previous work has discussed the changes that occur in the transition from high school to university. With regards to the knowledge students are expected to learn, however, significant similarities have been noted: to do well in introductory university courses, students can learn to solve a particular subset of tasks through routinized techniques, with limited awareness of the supporting mathematical theory. Characteristics of participation - A mathematician and a mathematics educator collaborating on a developmental research project

International audience; In this paper, a developmental research project involving offering mathematical modelling (MM) activities to university biology students is presented, and a particular aspect is studied, namely the project as a collaboration between mathematicians and mathematics educators. The aim of the paper is to investigate what characterizes their participation in the project, and how the characteristics of the project and its development might influence this participation. Anna Murià, publicista i ideòloga (1936-1939)

L’objectiu d’aquest article és seguir la trajectòria com a publicista d’Anna Murià compresa entre 1936, any en què s’incorporà al Diari de Barcelona i el 1939, data en què va emprendre el camí de l’exili cap a França. Volem constatar l’existència d’una producció ideològica i política important durant aquests anys en els principals mitjans de l’època. L’estudi d’aquest període, el més desconegut de l’autora, aporta noves dades i resulta interessant atès el canvi significatiu que l’esclat de la guerra i el posterior exili propiciaren en la vida de Murià, perceptible tant des del punt de vista ideològic com personal, fet que repercutí clarament en la seva obra.
