The Genesis of Finnish Museology

2021

My chapter describes the history of Finnish museology. I use an archival approach to show how museology became a university discipline, as well as to show the efforts made to enhance professionalism in this area. Museology is a young science in Finland, and its development stems from a knowledge of collection care. I introduce the role of such terms as museography, museology and heritology as part of the Finnish museology field. nonPeerReviewed

Agency in first-semester university students’ career plans

2014

In this paper I examine expressions of agency in autobiographical narratives by Finnish speaking university students of Swedish. Students who write about themselves, their decisions and their career plans are simultaneously involved in (re)constructing their identities. The narratives often include references to “communities of practice” (Lave & Wenger 1991; Wenger 1998) that the students consider as significant, and whose membership they see as something worth dreaming of. These kinds of first-person stories can be regarded as important as far as identity formation is concerned (Sfard & Prusak 2005). The narratives can help in building a bridge between the narrator’s past, the present and …

MAKE LIFE EASIER ON CAMPUS WITH HIGH-SPEED NETWORK

2012

In this paper I have shown that with the evolution of technology, networks and the Internet have become an almost daily necessity, being an essential part of our individual, economic and social life. On their well-functioning depend our governmental, commercial and even personal activities. The modern information society is already a reality, which ignores frontiers which may pass any spatial or temporal limitations due to the communication system. Economy, politics and society today are based ever more on a computerized infrastructure.

An analysis of english discourse markers of reformulation

2003

SUMARYThe present dissertation deals with the notion of reformulation and with a group of lexical units by means of which the activity of reformulation is codified and explicitly signaled in the language. These lexical units will be referred to as DISCOURSE MARKERS of REFORMULATION or REFORMULATORS. The area of reformulation and of English reformulators is still an uncharted and unexplored territory. Thus, it was necessary to first provide an adequate definition of the notion of REFORMULATION in the English speaking-world that would allow me to lay the foundations for the detailed study of a group of lexical units that display a reformulative function in English. Secondly, I elaborated a ju…

One minute papers: rendiment i satisfacció de l'alumnat

2014

The role of languages at Finnish universities

2011

The promotion of multilingualism is one of the objectives of the European Union. However, in academic contexts, internationalisation and multilingual expertise are often understood as using English as a medium in teaching, research, tutoring and administrative communication. To explore the role of different languages at Finnish universities, an online survey was conducted in November – December 2009 among their staff, with 3605 respondents across disciplines and occupational groups. In this paper, we will present some of the results focussing on the following questions: How important are different languages considered in a university working environment? What are the language skills and use…

MIGRATION OF THE HIGHLY EDUCATED: EVIDENCE FROM RESIDENCE SPELLS OF UNIVERSITY GRADUATES*

2011

We examine the inter-regional migration of university graduates from 1991 to 2003 in Finland. The results show that time matters: two-years before and during the graduation year the hazard rates of migration increase, and then decrease thereafter. Although university graduates are particularly mobile, we find that most of them do not move from their region of studies within 10 years after graduation. The out-migration, i.e., brain drain, is much higher among graduates in the more peripheral universities than in the growth centers (Helsinki in particular). Migration is also substantially more likely for those studying away from the home region than for those studying at home. peerReviewed

Does openness and open access policy relate to the success of universities?

2013

This study takes a closer look at the Ranking Web of Universities and Ranking Web of Repositories rankings and tries to examine if there is a connection between these two rankings. Study is done by analyzing the success of University of Jyväskylä and the institutional repository JyX of the University in these rankings. Comparison shows that the JyX archive plays an important role in University’s success especially when analyzing the presence and openness of the University. By analyzing the success of eight European countries in these rankings and cross reading these findings with the development of relative citation impact shown in a report by the Finnish Academy, some interesting common tr…
