An immigrant mother’s thoughts on the use of Finnish in English workbooks
2018
I moved to Finland with my family three and a half years ago from Hungary. My older son (aged 11 then) spent a year in a Finnish preparatory class before he continued his studies in the 5th grade. He chose English as his A1 language because he had learnt it for three years in a Hungarian school. Despite his knowledge, the English home assignments proved to be very difficult for him to solve. The activity book relied greatly on the majority language: the instructions and many of the exercises required Finnish knowledge. We spent a lot of time using an electronic dictionary to do the English homework together. Finnish skills were needed even in the English language tests that he had to take, …

Redescribing the Nation : Anti-Semitism as a tool of nation-building in the Hungarian Numerus Clausus debates, 1920-1928
2018
Abstract Boosting national spirit through projection of otherness is not a new phenomenon, at least in authoritarian regimes. Yet the role of anti-Semitism in the Numerus Clausus debates in the Hungarian parliament in 1920 and 1928 is worth deeper analysis, as it bore a peculiar role in the Hungarian interwar counterrevolutionary nation-building. The Numerus Clausus law of 1920 set ethnic quotas to university enrolment; the explicit argument for this was countering the Jewish ‘over-representation’ in Hungarian society. However, in 1928 the law was amended, abolishing (in principle) the said quotas; this time the arguments favoured national consolidation, where segregation was to be moderate…
Hybrid practices meet nation-state language policies: Transcarpathia in the twentieth century and today
2016
AbstractFrom the early twentieth century to the present day, Transcarpathia has belonged to several states: the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, Czechoslovakia, the Hungarian Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and finally to Ukraine. The status of what counts as a minority and a majority language has changed each time the state affiliation has been changed. Based on the long term research by Csernicskó, and on the one-month fieldwork carried out by Laihonen in 2012, our goal is to provide an autonomous critical account and discourse analysis of the linguistic situation in Transcarpathia. We draw examples especially from the linguistic landscape, which documents the hybrid practices difficult to catch w…
The changing schoolscape in a Szekler village in Romania: signs of diversity in rehungarization
2015
In this paper, we explore the connections between a linguistic landscape and language ideologies in an elementary school in a village within the Hungarian region of Szeklerland in Romania. This ‘schoolscape’ is analysed as a display or materialization of the ‘hidden curriculum’ regarding the construction of linguistic and cultural identities. We draw on fieldwork carried out in 2012 and 2013 and examine two dimensions of change in progress: (1) changes in the use of Hungarian and Romanian as languages of teaching and learning and as languages of written administration; and (2) changes in the display of these languages in the schoolscape. Since 1990, there has been a tendency towards rehunga…
Autobiographical reading
2010
In my book, I have attempted the elaboration of a system for rereading 20th-century Hungarian autobiographies, by way of putting the emphasis on theoretical considerations. (From the “Death of the Author” to the Resurrection of the Author, Stereotypes in Autobiographical Reading) The major analytical aspects of the Autobiographical Reading focuses on the language based means of the representation of the Self. (Language and Subject, Staging the Self, Inter-Replacing Play of Image and Representation, Relationship between the Narrating and the Narrated Autobiographical Self, Memory and Identity) The choice of this subject matter is justified first of all by the fact that the conditions for the…
Otthon és haza : tanulmányok a romániai magyar kisebbség történetéről
2013
The goal of this thesis is to show, through the history of the Hungarian minority in Romania, what drives the self-organisation of a minority community, and to what degree, in what respect is this historical, social phenomenon specific. Beside the theoretical introduction, the thesis consists of eight chapters, organised into three larger blocks. The structure reflects a methodological distinction as well: in the beginning, some case studies are offered; these are followed by presentations of institutional and conceptual history; in conclusion, an interpretive model is offered. The first part, entitled Cleavages, contains three case studies. These present in detail the major historical turn…

The question of Western Hungary/Burgenland, 1918-1923 : a territorial question in the context of national and international policy
2008
