Immune responses during COVID-19 infection

2020

International audience; Over the past 16 years, three coronaviruses (CoVs), severe acute respiratory syndrome CoV (SARS-CoV) in 2002, Middle East respiratory syndrome CoV (MERS-CoV) in 2012 and 2015, and SARS-CoV-2 in 2020, have been causing severe and fatal human epidemics. The unpredictability of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) poses a major burden on health care and economic systems across the world. This is caused by the paucity of in-depth knowledge of the risk factors for severe COVID-19, insufficient diagnostic tools for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, as well as the absence of specific and effective drug treatments. While protective humoral and cellular immune responses are usually m…

SARS-CoV-2 envelope protein topology in eukaryotic membranes

2020

Coronavirus E protein is a small membrane protein found in the virus envelope. Different coronavirus E proteins share striking biochemical and functional similarities, but sequence conservation is limited. In this report, we studied the E protein topology from the new SARS-CoV-2 virus both in microsomal membranes and in mammalian cells. Experimental data reveal that E protein is a single-spanning membrane protein with the N-terminus being translocated across the membrane, while the C-terminus is exposed to the cytoplasmic side (Nt lum /Ct cyt ). The defined membrane protein topology of SARS-CoV-2 E protein may provide a useful framework to understand its interaction with other viral and ho…

Antiviral prophylaxis in patients with haematological malignancies and solid tumours: Guidelines of the Infectious Diseases Working Party (AGIHO) of …

2006

Morbidity and mortality in patients with malignancies are increased by viral infections. These mostly are reactivations of asymptomatic latent infections. They primarily concern clinical entities associated with the reactivation of herpes viruses, such as varicella zoster virus (VZV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Respiratory tract infections caused by influenza, parainfluenza or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are less common. Since reactivation of latent infections has major clinical impact, antiviral prophylaxis is an attractive approach for patients expecting immunosuppression. The main risk factor for clinically relevant reactivation is profound disruption of cellular immune response. Du…

Sensory systems sequentially extract increasingly complex features. ON and OFF pathways, for example, encode increases or decreases of a stimulus from a common input. This ON/OFF pathway split is thought to occur at individual synaptic connections through a sign-inverting synapse in one of the pathways. Here, we show that ON selectivity is a multisynaptic process in the Drosophila visual system. A pharmacogenetics approach demonstrates that both glutamatergic inhibition through GluClα and GABAergic inhibition through Rdl mediate ON responses. Although neurons postsynaptic to the glutamatergic ON pathway input L1 lose all responses in GluClα mutants, they are resistant to a cell-type-specifi…

Regional Farmers’ Perception and Societal Issues in Vineyards Affected by High Erosion Rates

2021

We explore the current situation in a viticultural region in Eastern Spain from a holistic and multifaceted research approach, which allowed us to understand the biophysical conditions, economic cost, social impact, and perception of the farmers’ community to the use of catch crops. A survey of the perception of the farmers, and an assessment of the biophysical impact of catch crops (CC) and tillage (C = Control plot) on soil organic matter, bulk density, infiltration capacity (single ring infiltrometer), and runoff generation and soil erosion (rainfall simulation experiments) was carried out. Two representative fields as study sites were selected in Les Alcusses valley, within Els Alforins…

Opettajan ja oppilaan välinen vuorovaikutus klassisessa laulunopetuksessa

2011

Opettajan ja oppilaan välisen vuorovaikutuksen luonne laulunopetuksessa on merkittävä asia oppilaan oppimisen kannalta. Tutkimuksessani selvitän millaista vuorovaikutusta opettajalla on eri oppilaiden kanssa, joilla on erilaiset persoonallisuudet. Tutkin, mitkä asiat vaikuttavat vuorovaikutuksen luonteeseen ja millä keinoin erityisesti opettaja voi edesauttaa toimivan vuorovaikutuksen syntymistä. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan laadullinen. Aineistonkeruumenetelmänä on käytetty videokuvausta. Tutkimusta varten on kuvattu kahden eri laulunopettajan tunteja, yhteensä kuuden oppilaan laulutunnit. Oppilaiden persoonallisuuden määrittelemisessä on käytetty apuna big five -persoonallisuusmittaria. Tutki…

Jauno vēsturnieku zinātniskie lasījumi, V : Konferences referātu tēzes

2019

Šoruden jau piekto gadu pēc kārtas LU Latvijas vēstures institūts un Valmieras muzejs rīko pasākumu “Jauno vēsturnieku zinātniskie lasījumi”, kas adresēts topošajiem vēstures pētniekiem un humanitārās un mākslas zinātņu nozares studentiem, kuru starpdisciplinārie pētījumi ietver vēsturi. Pasākums noris VPP Valsts pētījumu programmas “Latvijas mantojums un nākotnes izaicinājumi valsts ilgtspējai” projekta “Indivīda, sabiedrības un valsts mijiedarbība kopējā Latvijas vēstures procesā: vērtību konflikti un kopīgu vērtību veidošanās vēsturiskos lūzumu punktos” ietvaros kā zināšanu pārnesi nodrošinoša aktivitāte, kas tuvina zinātniekus un studentus. Šogad lasījumiem pieteikti 22 referāti. Autori…

Jauno vēsturnieku zinātniskie lasījumi, 4 : Starpdisciplināri pētījumi Latvijas vēsturē

2019
