The advanced Virgo longitudinal control system for the O2 observing run

Following a successful period of data-taking between 2006 and 2011, the Virgo gravitational-wave detector was taken offline for a major upgrade. The changes made to the instrument significantly increased the complexity of the control systems and meant that an extended period of commissioning was required to reach a sensitivity appropriate for science data-taking. This commissioning period was completed in July of 2017 and the second-generation Advanced Virgo detector went on to join the Advanced LIGO detectors in the O2 science run in August of the same year. Use of fragmentation beams at LNS with CHIMERA detector

The recent intensity upgrade of the LNS fragmentation beam is discussed. The available beams, the tagging procedures and details on the beam quality are reported. The NUMEN project @ LNS: Status and perspectives

The NUMEN project aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by high-accuracy measurements of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reaction cross sections. In particular, the (18O,18Ne) and (20Ne,20O) reactions are used as tools for β+β+ and β−β− decays, respectively. In the experiments, performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania, the beams are accelerated by the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) and the reaction ejectiles are detected the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. A system upgrade requires careful planning as its implications to organizational systems might be enormous. Although in IS literature the requirements and process of systems upgrade have been discussed, the timing when to upgrade and what factors guide it has been of lesser interest. Consequently, in this paper we focus on information systems upgrading and its timing from the perspective of the user organization. Upgrading is enabled by the availability of a new software version. When to upgrade, meanwhile, is determined by the business interests of the customer organization, business calendar, development projects, and the vendor. Erosion, screening, and migration of tungsten in the JET divertor

The erosion of tungsten (W), induced by the bombardment of plasma and impurity particles, determines the lifetime of plasma-facing components as well as impacting on plasma performance by the influx of W into the confined region. The screening of W by the divertor and the transport of W in the plasma determines largely the W content in the plasma core, but the W source strength itself has a vital impact on this process.
