Editorial issue 2

2018

It has been a very long trip since I wrote my last editorial. The first issue of the Journal received a strong welcome from all over the world in the beginning of 2016, but there was something missing that drove us to a winding road that ended in an even stronger situation: the support of the University of Valencia’s Publication Service (UVPS). The missing thing in the first issue was the DOI (Digital Object Identifier). All the online journals have a DOI to identify the papers and allow a permanent link to them. Each DOI is unique for each paper. We look for a DOI provider in our environment and found the UVPS to offer DOIs for free to their teachers. As I am one of them, I went to ask for…

EV-planning: Electric vehicle itinerary planning

2014

International audience; In the latest few years, lot of efforts have been done to pave the way to sustainable mobility, in order to solve pollution problems and fuel shortage. The use of electric vehicles (EV) is considered as one of the best ecologic and economic solution. However, autonomy barriers and limitations slow the progress and the deployment of this technology. In this paper, we propose an advanced electric vehicles' fleet management architecture. This architecture considers the most important factors that can affect the traveling mode of electric vehicles, in order to offer different services to fleet management companies for an efficient monitoring and management of their fleet…

A Network Formation Game Approach to Study BitTorrent Tit-for-Tat

2007

The Tit-for-Tat strategy implemented in BitTorrent (BT) clients is generally considered robust to selfish behaviours. The authors of [1] support this belief studying how Tit-for-Tat can affect selfish peers who are able to set their upload bandwidth. They show that there is a "good" Nash Equilibrium at which each peer uploads at the maximum rate. In this paper we consider a different game where BT clients can change the number of connections to open in order to improve their performance. We study this game using the analytical framework of network formation games [2]. In particular we characterize the set of pairwise stable networks the peers can form and how the peers can dynamically reach…

Availability in BitTorrent Systems

2007

In this paper, we investigate the problem of highly available, massive-scale file distribution in the Internet. To this end, we conduct a large-scale measurement study of BitTorrent, a popular class of systems that use swarms of actively downloading peers to assist each other in file distribution. The first generation of BitTorrent systems used a central tracker to enable coordination among peers, resulting in low availability due to the tracker's single point of failure. Our study analyzes the prevalence and impact of two recent trends to improve BitTorrent availability: (i) use of multiple trackers, and (ii) use of Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs), both of which also help to balance load be…

Collaborative Content Downloading in VANETs with Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation

2019

Vehicle collaborative content downloading has become a hotspot in current vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) research. However, in reality, the highly dynamic nature of VANET makes users lose resources easily, and the transmission of invalid segment data also wastes valuable bandwidth and storage of the users&rsquo

Improving Chord Lookup Protocol for P2PSIP-Based Communication Systems

2009

Chord has been suggested as mandatory overlay technology in the future P2PSIP-based communication systems. Chord allows for the available peer/resource lookup in no more than hops, where N is the total number of the peers in the overlay network. However, as a protocol originally designed for background downloading applications, Chord has a few drawbacks when supporting P2PSIP real-time communication systems. These drawbacks are related to ID assignment, the relation between ID and physical location, the routing styles and lack of cache, etc. In this paper, we investigate several approaches that can improve the efficiency of the peer/resource lookup algorithm. After that, we simulate two sys…

Processing privacy information and decision-making for smartphone apps among young German smartphone users

2018

While privacy behaviour is generally equated with self-disclosure, other forms of behaviour that potentially infringe an individual’s privacy, such as downloading an app, are being neglected by research. We seek to fill this gap by modelling app decision-making within a dual-process model of the attitude–behaviour relationship and the role of privacy attitudes in two kinds of information processing: (1) spontaneous, heuristic processes that rely on automated attitude activation and (2) elaborate, cognitive processes that rely on behavioural intentions to guide behaviour. We used a quasi-experimental design to investigate app decision-making processes for N = 89 participants in N = 254 decis…

Reading the Web—Students' Perceptions about the Internet

2006

This study explores the perceptions of Finnish 15‐year‐olds on the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet. The data, students' written responses (N = 3112), were gathered in the context of the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in the spring of 2000 as a national option. The data were analysed by close reading and using the Atlas.ti application for coding. Students regard easy access to a variety of current information as the most important advantage of the Internet. Finding new friends and chatting with old ones was also emphasised, as well as the downloading capacities of the Internet. Although problems of finding reliable and truthful information were recogn…

TuBaFrost: European Virtual Tumor Tissue Banking

2006

TuBaFrost is a consortium responsible for the task to create a virtual European human frozen tumor tissue bank, composed of high quality frozen tumor tissue collections with corresponding accurate diagnosis stored in European cancer centers and universities, searchable on the Internet, providing rules for access and use and a code of conduct to comply with the various legal and ethical regulations in European countries. Such infrastructure would enlarge tissue availability and accessibility in large amounts of specified or even rare tumor samples. Design of an infrastructure for European residual tissue banking with the described characteristics, clear focus points emerge that can be broken…

Cartographic Language in Thematic Maps

2015

This paper analyzes the effectiveness of maps as transmitters of information. To this end, some basic concepts concerning the properties of cartographic language are examined, with the aim of helping the reader design maps conveying geographic information as clearly as possible. It also describes the innate taste of geographers for maps –how these attract and stimulate them. Then it deals with the emergence of the Internet and the new technologies allowing massive map visualization, downloading and production. The paper is illustrated with ten thematic maps, in which visual variables (i.e. size, shape, value, color, orientation and texture) are combined with the different marks (points, lin…
