Effect of Prolonged Military Field Training on Neuromuscular and Hormonal Responses and Shooting Performance in Warfighters

2018

Introduction: Previous studies have shown that military field training (MFT) has effects on warfighters’ hormonal responses, neuromuscular performance, and shooting accuracy. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes in body composition, upper and lower body strength, serum hormone concentrations of testosterone (TES) and cortisol (COR), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and shooting accuracy during prolonged MFT. Methods: Serum hormone concentrations, isometric strength of the upper and lower extremities, and shooting performance were measured four times during the study: before MFT (PRE), after 12 d (MID), at the end of MFT (PO…

The prognosis of patients having received optimal therapy for nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding might be worse in daily practice than in ra…

2010

International audience; BACKGROUND: Combination of endoscopic haemostatic and high-dose intravenous proton-pump inhibitors is considered to be the standard care for patients with acute peptic ulcer bleeding. AIM: This study assessed predictive factors of rebleeding and death in unselected patients presented to our hospital. METHODS: Consecutive patients with nonmalignant bleeding ulcers and stigmata of recent haemorrhage who received optimal treatment, between 22 August 2003 and 15 October 2007, were studied retrospectively. RESULTS: Among 140 included patients, 45 (32%) rebled and 30 received another haemostatic endoscopy, which was successful in 20 cases. In multivariate analysis, the onl…

Rectosigmoid Pouch (Mainz Pouch II) in Children

2005

Continent anal urinary diversion is a therapeutic option in bladder exstrophy. We report our long-term results with the rectosigmoid pouch (Mainz pouch II), a modification of the classic ureterosigmoidostomy.A total of 38 children with a mean age of 5 years (range 0.5 to 17) underwent a Mainz pouch II procedure between 1991 and 2004. Most patients (33) had bladder exstrophy or incontinent epispadias. In 14 children (37%) urinary diversion was performed after failed primary reconstruction. In 6 children conversion was performed from an incontinent type of urinary diversion. Renal function, continence and metabolic changes were analyzed. A total of 35 children were followed for a mean of 112 …

Closed loop stimulation improve ejection fraction in pediatric patients with pacemaker and ventricular dysfunction

2007

Background: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the effect of the closed loop stimulation (CLS) on the ejection fraction in pediatric patients, affected by complete atrioventricular block (CAVB) or CAVB and sinus node dysfunction (SND), with a previously implanted pacemaker (PM) and ventricular dysfunction. The role of electrical therapy in the treatment of pediatric patients with congenital atrioventricular (AV) blocks has been shown. Conventional right ventricular pacing seems to affect ventricular function. Up to now, the feasibility and the long-term results of biventricular pacing in pediatric patients were not entirely clear. Methods: In eight pediatric patients with a p…

Changes in meal pattern among Norwegian children from 2001 to 2008

2011

AbstractObjectiveThe present study aimed to analyse changes in meal pattern among Norwegian children from 2001 to 2008 in general; to analyse associations between meal pattern and gender, parental educational level and number of parents in the household; and to analyse the association between intake of unhealthy snacks, meal pattern and the mentioned variables.DesignWithin the Fruits and Vegetables Make the Marks (FVMM) project, two cross-sectional studies were conducted, one in 2001 and one in 2008, where participants from the same schools filled in a questionnaire on meals eaten the previous day.SubjectsParticipants were 6th and 7th grade pupils, n 1488 in 2001 and n 1339 in 2008.SettingT…

Hybrid salivary gland tumor of the upper lip or just an adenoid cystic carcinoma? Case report

2010

A 65 year-old male patient with a one year-duration tumoral growth located in the upper lip was diagnosed on incisional biopsy as epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma. After wide surgical excision the histopathological analysis revealed the lesion was composed predominantly (>90%) of adenoid cystic carcinoma. In new sections it was found a very small and isolated area of adenoid cystic carcinoma at the bottom of the incisional biopsy. As surgical margins were free of lesion, no adjuvant treatment was given. The occurrence of a transitory ischaemic attack at 36 months of follow-up led to a neurological and MRI evaluation, which disclosed a well-defined 3.5x3 cm lesion suggestive of metastasis,…

Skeletal abnormalities of the upper limbs--neonatal diagnosis of 49,XXXXY syndrome.

2012

A case of neonatal diagnosis of 49,XXXXY syndrome is presented. Clinical identification was prompted by a bilateral thickening of the radioulnar joints and X-ray imaging disclosing almost complete radioulnar synostosis. Conventional karyotyping was initiated and revealed a karyotype of 49,XXXXY. Previously reported neonatal symptoms such as low birth weight, muscular hypotonia, or genital malformations were absent in this case. Microsatellite analysis showed two different X chromosomes each present in two copies, supporting that the four X chromosomes had arisen from a nondisjunction in maternal meiosis I followed by a second nondisjunction involving both X chromosomes in meiosis II. Multid…

Cardiovascular responses to dynamic and static upper-body exercise in a cold environment in coronary artery disease patients

2021

Abstract Purpose Upper-body exercise performed in a cold environment may increase cardiovascular strain, which could be detrimental to patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). This study compared cardiovascular responses of CAD patients during graded upper-body dynamic and static exercise in cold and neutral environments. Methods 20 patients with stable CAD performed 30 min of progressive dynamic (light, moderate, and heavy rating of perceived exertion) and static (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% of maximal voluntary contraction) upper body exercise in cold (− 15 °C) and neutral (+ 22 °C) environments. Heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and electrocardiographic (ECG) responses were recorded an…

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of “the Norwegian screening test for dyslexia”

2018

The aim of this study was to develop and investigate the psychometric properties of a screening protocol for Norwegian students in upper secondary school. The protocol was designed to assess skills that are at stake in dyslexia. It was administered to 232 students. In the absence of a “gold standard,” comparisons were made between students who reported normal literacy skills (n = 184) and literacy problems (n = 48). Significant group differences were found across all areas. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analyses demonstrated good discriminatory power. The screening protocol met the standards for reliability and validity. It has the potential to be a useful …

Effect of segmental muscle vibration on upper extremity functional ability poststroke: A randomized controlled trial.

2019

Abstract Background: Upper extremity functional impairments are common consequences of stroke. Therefore, continuous investigation of effective interventions for upper extremity functions after stroke is a necessity. Segmental muscle vibration (SMV) is one of the interventions that incorporate sensory stimulation to improve motor cortical excitability. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of 5-minute SMV application along with supervised physical therapy (SPT) on improving activities of daily living and motor recovery on the hemiparetic upper extremity in patients with stroke. Methods: A sample of 37 patients poststroke (29 males) was randomly allocated to either SPT contr…
