Terlipressin or vasopressin plus transdermal nitroglycerin in a treatment strategy for digestive bleeding in cirrhosis

1994

Between 1988 and 1990 an unblinded, randomized trial of terlipressin or vasopressin plus transdermal nitroglycerin, as part of a treatment strategy including emergency sclerotherapy for actively bleeding varices, was conducted during 165 admissions in 137 patients with cirrhosis and upper digestive bleeding. Eighty-four patient admissions were assigned to terlipressin (2 mg every 6 h) and 81 to vasopressin (0.4 to 0.8 unit per min) plus transdermal nitroglycerin (20 to 80 mg). The two groups were comparable for relevant clinical data, but there were slightly more patients with hepatocellular carcinoma or terminal conditions in the terlipressin group. After the 24-h study period, failure to …

Low back pain in workers. Occupational risk and related variables

2019

ABSTRACT Introduction: Low back pain is a prevalent condition with health, social and occupational impact. The aim of this study is to assess the influence of social and occupational factors on worker patients with low back pain. Method: A descriptive study was conducted on 349 subjects with low back pain. The main independent variable was being a manual or non-manual worker. Other social-occupational and lifestyle variables were also considered. The level of disability was established according to the Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire, and the association between the type of job and the test was evaluated using multiple linear regressions. Results: Manual workers are heavier …

Validation of motor and functional scales for the evaluation of adult patients with 5q spinal muscular atrophy

2021

ABSTRACTObjectiveTo assess in adult spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) patients the construct validity and responsiveness of several outcome measures.MethodsPatients older than 15 years and followed-up at least for 6 months, between October 2015 and August 2020, with one motor function scale (Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale Expanded, HFMSE; Revised Upper Limb module, RULM) in five referral centers were included. Bedside functional scales (Egen Klassification, EK2; Revised Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale, ALSFRS-R) were also collected when available. Correlations and regression models were performed to evaluate the construct validity. The monthly slopes of change were use…

Trial on the Possibility to Assess the Static and Dynamic Balance in the Elderly with Diseases on the Level of the Supporting Joints

2019

The study aims to identify human walking disorders, proposing a model to solve these disorders, regardless of what caused them. Material and method Clinical and somatometric tests, pedometric investigations and sensors were used. An outpatient trial was conducted for a period of 6 weeks with a frequency of application of the recovery program of 3 times / week. For this study, there were 21 patients over the age of 65 years, which were divided into two groups: the witness group in which 11 patients had upper limb and / or spine disorders, and the control group with 10 patients with degenerative diseases in the knees and ankles. The tests were applied to both groups following the demographic …

Effects of wrist oscillations on contralateral neurological postural tremor using a new myohaptic device ('wristalyzer')

2007

Upper limb postural tremor consists of distinct oscillations, mainly mechanical-reflex and central-neurogenic. These oscillations are superimposed upon a background of irregular fluctuations in muscle force. Muscle spindles play key-roles in the information flow to supra-spinal and spinal generators. Oscillations were delivered using a new generation portable myohaptic device, called 'wristalyzer', which takes into account the ergonomy of upper limbs allowing a fine adjustment to each configuration of upper limb segments. The nominal torque of the device is 4 Nm, with a maximal rotation velocity of 300 degrees/s and a range of motion of +45 to -45 degrees. Reliability was assessed in basal …

Detection of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma in a context of acrokeratosis paraneoplastica: Case report

2018

Background: Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica is an infrequent paraneoplastic disease in which cutaneous lesions appear and develop in a context of an underlying malignancy. Upper aerodigestive tract carcinomas are the most common neoplasias associated with this syndrome. The aim of this report is to raise awareness of this syndrome, since the recognition of the skin lesions could allow suspicion and diagnosis of the underlying neck malignancy at an early curable stage. Methods: We report a case of a 62-year-old life-long smoking male who presented a several months evolution of multiple skin lesions, affecting both ear lobes, hands and feet. He was referred for appropriate diagnosis and treatme…

Bedeutung der Kalkdepot-elimination bei Tendinosis calcarea der Schulter

2000

Aim: To evaluate the effect of complete elimination of the calcific deposit on the clinical outcome in patients with a recalcitrant calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder. Patients and methods: 50 patients with a chronic calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder (Type Gartner I or II) underwent a single application of extracorporeal shock waves (3000 impulses, energy flux density 0.60mj/ mm 2 ). After one year 45 patients were evaluated radiologically and clinically. Results: Radiologically a complete absorption of the calcific deposit was observed in 21 patients (47%). In 9 patients there was no radiological change. The radiological success was closely related to the radiomorphology of the depo…

Kinder und Jugendliche mit neurogener Blasenfunktionsstrung

2004

After the failure of conservative treatment in patients with neurogenic bladders, urinary diversion is a viable compromise between the urologist's concerns and the patient's desire, as the upper urinary tract can be protected in the long-term and high continence rates can be provided. This can be achieved with an acceptable complication rate. Our indications for orthotopic bladder augmentation or substitution involve patients with a good orthopedic condition and mobility, who find it easy to perform CISC through the urethra. A continent umbilical stoma offers a good alternative in obese, immobile or wheelchair bound patients. The serous lined extramural tunnel technique has proven to be sup…

Comparison of TMS-induced arm acticvation and upper limb functional tests in hemiparetic stroke

2013

Stroke has a major impact in the total cost of healthcare in the Western world as stroke is the most common cause of long-term disability [1]. In attempts to enhance motor recovery after stroke effective treatment strategies have been developed in recent years. Appropriate evaluation of the intervention programs requires comprehensive and accurate assessment of the residual abnormal function. In the present study we compare two well-known clinical functional scoring tests developed for the assessment of hemiparetic upper limb function due to stroke and navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS), which measures involuntary target muscle response to cortical stimulation. The aim is to…
