ECONOMIC POLICIES AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN LATIN AMERICA

2009

Michele Alacevich and Andrea Costa examine the strong interrelations between urban planning and economic planning that developed in the early 1950s in Latin America, where arguably the multifaceted programming effort of the post-Second World War era gained its greater momentum. The plan was considered the main tool, common to economic as well as to urban policies, while equilibrium was the principal concept which framed the elaboration and the implementation of any development plan. Alacevich and Costa pay particular attention to the case of Colombia, visited by some of the most illustrious modernist architects such as Le Corbusier and José Luis Sert, who were attracted by the chance to rea…

2002

This article studies the current role of geodemographic analysis in Spanish spatial planning; its importance, gaps and problems. This is done both from a theoretical and planning perspectives. The theoretical perspective studies the references to the population in the legal norm of the several forms of planning, and in particular in the very recent Autonomous Regions' laws. The planning perspective refers to the specific spatial plans that have been aproved. The article identifies three types of spatial planning: urban planning, town and country planning and environmental planning. Therefore, excluding the sectorial planning with spatial incidence.

The Fluid City Paradigm: a deeper innovation

2016

Waterfront regeneration needs to be disruptive: a paradigm shift and a deeper innovation of methods and tools must be set up in order to act in the changing times we live. In current global crisis, a true metamorphosis, the strong flows of financial, social and relational capitals that powered regeneration of urban waterfronts over the last twenty years are no longer available to be tapped in an indiscriminate manner as was the case until just a few years ago. The most dynamic cities in the future will no longer be those that are able to attract big projects and rich investors driven by the real estate market or leisure-based development, but the cities have deep socio-cultural diversity an…

A Short Presentation of LucSim

2017

LucSim is a cellular automata (CA) dedicated to geographical analysis and spatial simulation for researchers and advanced planning institutes, providing user-friendly software in order to analyze and simulate land use changes and dynamics. Two complementary models are integrated in the CA: (1) a Markov Chain used to calculate transition matrices from a date to another, and (2) a Decision Tree able to automatically determine a set of transition rules to be applied on land use data. LucSim includes GIS compatibility functions allowing to display ESRI shapefiles and is based on raster georeferenced images saved in TIF format. It was mostly applied on French urban case studies.

Distances, espaces et représentations (une revue)

1990

Agri-urban patterns in Mediterranean urban regions: the case study of Pisa

2020

International audience; Urban regions require planning tools in order to manage agricultural areas under urban pressure. The aim of our paper is to test an analytical framework that combines both the composition in urban and agricultural land covers and their spatial configuration into four general agri-urban patterns: isolated fields, urban belt fields, periurban agricultural areas and rural areas. We evaluated the spatial distribution and the changes of such patterns in the short-term (2003-2011) starting from Spot images for the case study of Pisa, Italy. The results indicate an increase of the most urban patterns despite continuing to have cash crops, a stability of periurban agricultur…

Landscape Dynamics in Mediterranean Coastal Areas: Castelló de la Plana in the Last Hundred Years

2019

The littoral areas of the Mediterranean coastline have undergone a significant transformation due to their historical and intense human occupation. The result has been an evolution of different cultural landscape configurations, ranging from those with a marked agrarian character to artificial ones derived from the process of urbanisation and metropolitan growth. The objective of this paper is to define a model to characterise landscape types and units that explains the landscape dynamics (1910-2015) in Mediterranean coastal spaces at local scale, taking as study area the municipality and surroundings of Castelló de la Plana, in Spain. The aim is to identify the way in which society has app…

Urban Sprawl and Northern European Residential Tourism in the Spanish Mediterranean Coast

2016

Residential tourism from Northern European countries has influenced the process of urban development in the Spanish Mediterranean coast. We explain the recent urban growth in Spain (or “Spanish house bubble”) and then show the main characteristics of the influx of citizens from other European countries richer than Spain, especially into the Spanish Mediterranean coast and specifically into the Costa Blanca region. Finally we demonstrate the relationship between the development of residential tourism and the growth of urban sprawl in the Spanish Mediterranean coast and we analyze some of its consequences for the region..
