Past Objectives and Future Scenarios

2016

The intimate link between landscape and urban planning has long been denied and underestimated. In spite of the “good intentions” of certain scholars, practitioners and policy makers across Italy, Spain and other EU countries, their efforts are undermined by rigidly framed, sector-focused laws and by a concept of landscape defined in purely aesthetic terms. We have established the importance of identifying tools used to integrate the various approaches that “urbanism” and landscape planning adopt in dealing with urban planning to date. In fact, even with the prospect of significant environmental legislation, the discipline is still unable to incorporate the concept of landscape and its asso…

2020

Contemporary cities have administrations increasingly marked by urban planning guidelines that are guided by business and marketing and, to attract investments and tourists, implement strategies that aim to homogenize, spectacularize and control urban space. However, other experiences in the city potentially build new meaning to it, which would escape those strategically planned, creating alternative possibilities of uses, diverging from the way thar are predicted and proposed by the governmental power in their urban marketing strategies. The article discusses how the occupation of urban spaces by transvestites for prostitution may imply reflections on the role of norms of gender in the (re…

Economic geography and growth: recent advances and new results

1997

Two fields of economic theory have developed recently in parallel: on the one hand, economic geography aims to explain the formation of a heterogeneous space, i.e.how the agglomeration of households and firms determines differentiated regions, urban structures or urban systems; on the other hand, theories of endogenous growth propose new views on growth mechanisms which invalidate the traditional convergence rule. Thesetheories are based on common foundations such as increasing returns, spatial externalities and monopolistic competition. We examine here in some detail how the spatial dimension is implicit in endogenous growth theories. We emphasize the whys and wherefores of the combination…

Urban economics and endogenous dynamics in regional growth

1995

Informational interactions and the future of cities

1998

Present-day city growth is chiefly the result of new tertiary activities such as financial and producer services, R&D, or business administration. It seems that these activities need to be more spatially concentrated than traditional manufacturing activities. These new trends affect both the structure of cities and the structure of city systems. The specific nature of the new activities concentrated in city centers makes them information intensive. These activities consume human capital, knowledge and hightech capital, which are all rapidly changing inputs; they are based on complex decisionmakingprocesses; this renders them highly information-dependent. Inasmuch as these activities are the…

Between Public and Private. The house as a Primary Good for the Social City

2017

If we wish to study welfare states, we must begin with a set of criteria that define their role in society. This role is certainly not to spend or tax; nor is necessarily that of creating equality. It is generally believed that welfare-state backlash movements, tax revolts and roll backs are ignited when social expenditure burdens become too heavy. Anti welfare state backlash sentiments over the past decade have generally been weakest where welfare spendi…

URBANIZATION PROCESSES AND ITS SPECIFICS IN LATGALE

2010

Urbanization is an important demo-geographical process and a complex social phenomenon under impact of which changes are made not only to the global, regional or national settlement systems, but all socio-economic processes are also substantially transformed. Changes caused by urbanization have an impact on traditional way of life, cultural particularity, community and individual psychology and other aspects of spiritual life, therefore expressions and regularities of this process might be of interest not only for demographers, geographers and economists, but also for representatives of the field of humanities.

Paper presents the progress of urbanization processes…

The importance of Hygienics and Clean Water Treatment in Valencia (1860-1910)

2016
