Global sensitivity analysis for micropollutant modeling by means of an urban integrated approach

2015

The paper presents the sensitivity analysis of an integrated urban water quality system by means of the global sensitivity analysis (GSA). Specifically, an home-made integrated model developed in previous studies has been modified in order to include the micropollutant assessment (namely, sulfamethoxazole - SMX). The model is able to estimate also the interactions between the three components of the system: sewer system (SS), wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the receiving water body (RWB). The analysis has been applied to an experimental catchment nearby Palermo (Italy): the Nocella catchment. Five scenarios each characterized by different combinations of sub-systems (i.e., SS, WWTP an…

Global sensitivity analysis in integrated water quality modelling: an application to a real case study

2012

The increasing sensitivity towards water quality environmental issues led to the setting up of water quality integrated modelling approaches and the definition of water quality criteria that better represent the receiving water body quality status. More specifically, compared to the past, the tendency today is to design and manage the whole integrated urban drainage system, i.e. , wastewater treatment plant and receiving water body (RWB) considering each component not separately but jointly. Despite the advantages of a holistic approach for the assessment of the RWB quality state there are some limits that may prevent a straightforward application. Indeed, integrated models are generally ch…

Il riflesso del porto. Il progetto Tanger Port fra promozione politica e frammentazione urbana.

2015

"The reflection of the harbour. The Tanger Port project: political promotion and urban fragmentation" Relying on several large-scale projects launched during the fifteen-year reign of King Mohammed VI, Morocco is addressing its unprecedented infrastructural development as a crucial tool to bolster its economic competitiveness, and to turn the country into an attractive platform for foreign investment. Contributing to enhance the northern region and its Mediterranean façade, the Tanger Port renewal should be framed within the context of the colossal container terminal of Tanger Med, in a scenario distinguished by the current political promotion of the monarchical discourse. As the Tanger Por…

The Wastewater – A Problem of Integrated Urban Water Management

2013

Abstract In order to live the man uses various generating resources through waste products his work. Use of water resources causes many types of wastewater, depending on the type of household consumption, industrial or city. Integrated management of water resources represents practical ways in which sustainable development is achieved in the field of water, including wastewater management, and is also the responsibility of all interested parties: the state, local communities, users, operators and NGOs waters. The present study shows the role and the importance of integrated management of urban water. The steps to be followed in establishing wastewater management are trying highlighting new …

Energy, water and environmental balance of a complex water supply system

2015

The present paper describes the analysis of water and energy balance in a complex urban water supply system. The analysis was carried out employing Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodologies. The LCA approach was integrated with the analysis of the system energy and water balance. For a real size water supply system, based on the results of the individual LCAs, the current baseline was constructed highlighting the water, energy and environmental (in terms of CO2eq emissions in the atmosphere) costs of supplied water. Then, three different mitigation measures have been evaluated: the first is based on energy production by installation of photovoltaic systems; the second is based on energy recov…

Assessing performance in the management of the urban water cycle

2011

This paper proposes the use of directional distance functions and Data Envelopment Analysis techniques to assess technical efficiency in the provision of the different stages of the urban water cycle in Andalusia, a Southern European region. Evaluating performance in the management of specific stages of the urban water cycle provides utility managers and regulating authorities with relevant information that may not be detected by more conventional approaches based on assessing performance at utility level. We find that Andalusian water and sewage utilities could achieve significant increases in the volume of water delivered without diminishing the output of their other services and using th…

Integrated Urban Water Modeling with Uncertainty Analysis

2005

In the last 20th years, the scientific world has got particular care towards the problems that involve the respect of the environment. According to this point, several researches were developed to describe the phenomena that take place during both wet and dry period and to increase the knowledge in this field. In particular, the attention was addressed towards the problems linked with the pollution of the water body because of the pollution carried by rainfall waters in the urban environment. In order to obtain a good description of the problem, it is important, of course, to analyze both quantity and quality aspects connected with all the transformation phases that characterize the urban w…

Public-service provision in clientelist political settlements: Lessons from Ghana's urban water sector

2015

The politics of public-service delivery continues to be neglected under the supposedly more context-sensitive post-Washington Consensus. Using interviews and documentary evidence from Ghana, this article provides an account of the networks of political interference and informal practices in Ghana's public water utility. It argues that, in order to understand why private-sector participation succeeds or fails and why similar arrangements have different outcomes across developing countries, we need to examine the effects of the informal institutional context, particularly the country-specific political settlement in which public-service provision operates.

Modelling urban stormwater impact mitigation by using bmps and storage tanks

2005

The continuous growth of urban areas and the increasing public awareness about environmental impact of stormwater raised high interest on quality impact on the receiving water bodies. Indeed, in the last decades, large efforts have been provided for improving urban drainage systems in order to mitigate environmental impacts. In the present paper, a simplified modelling approach has been developed in order to evaluate the mitigation efficiency of different BMP schemes including infiltration and storage facilities and both considering possible distributed controls and centralised structures. The main goals of the research are the simulation of BMP efficiency in different operational condition…
