Disaster vulnerability by demographics?

2020

This article provides a brief overview of the relationship between disaster vulnerability and demographic variables. Population numbers and densities are examined along with using a gender focus as illustrative of individual characteristics. For the most part, people’s and society’s choices create vulnerabilities based on demographics rather than specific demographic characteristics inevitably conferring vulnerability.

Adaptation interventions and their effect on vulnerability in developing countries: Help, hindrance or irrelevance?

2021

This paper critically reviews the outcomes of internationally-funded interventions aimed at climate change adaptation and vulnerability reduction. It highlights how some interventions inadvertently reinforce, redistribute or create new sources of vulnerability. Four mechanisms drive these maladaptive outcomes: (i) shallow understanding of the vulnerability context; (ii) inequitable stakeholder participation in both design and implementation; (iii) a retrofitting of adaptation into existing development agendas; and (iv) a lack of critical engagement with how ‘adaptation success’ is defined. Emerging literature shows potential avenues for overcoming the current failure of adaptation intervent…

Volver al sentido de la ciudad. Reflexiones hermenéuticas y éticas

2020

Mining indigenous territories: Consensus, tensions and ambivalences in the Salar de Atacama

2022

Lithium mining in Chile’s Salar de Atacama (SdA) has a relatively long and controversial history, especially when it comes to the local Indigenous peoples. In this context, this paper looks at the ways mining activities, and different visions of territory and indigeneity co-produce each other in the particular context of the SdA. For this, we use historical and ethnographic methods and draw on studies in anthropology and geography. We aim to escape simplistic images of Indigenous peoples’ reactions to mining as reflecting victimhood, resistance, or strategic pragmatism, and show instead how individuals and groups organize and express themselves in ambivalent ways, maintaining complex relati…

Policy to support digitalisation of industries in various regional settings. A conceptual discussion

2022

The purpose of the article is to analyse regions’ varying preconditions for digitalisation of industry and, on that basis, discuss regionally tailored policy strategies to stimulate digitalisation. Building on both regional innovation system and asset modification approaches, the authors suggest a theoretical framework that identifies regions’ potential for digitalisation from their stock of relevant assets at the firm and innovation system level. The analysis identifies four types of regions with different preconditions for supporting digitalisation of industries. This in turn provides the foundation for a discussion of the role of actor-based and system-based policy strategies to support …

One coast, two systems: Regional innovation systems and entrepreneurial discovery in Western Norway

2021

This paper introduces an analytical framework for understanding how specialized and diversified regional innovation system (RIS) differ in the way an entrepreneurial discovery process (EDP) is likely to unfold. To analytically explore the proposed framework, we deploy a sequential explanatory design approach, using quantitative data to analyze the regional industry structure of the city regions of Bergen and Stavanger in Western Norway, followed by a qualitative analysis of interviews with key stakeholders in both regions. We find that the city regions face unique challenges that align with an understanding of their respective RIS categorization, providing evidence that the framework propos…

Dining out as a performative event

2020

Public events are scripted, staged and choreographed. Dining out is a perception-affect experience, but it is rare that the experience becomes a performative event in which guests are actors in the scene. The Madeleine’s Food Theatre in Copenhagen created a performative dining-out experience where guests did not have knowledge of the script, stage or choreography beforehand. When people became part of making a space into an event, they entered into unimaginable atmospheres and moods. The article explores the dining experience at Madeleine’s Food Theatre as a collage of body-mind impressions affected by different kinds of forces of presence. Paid open access
