The Production of the Landscape of Exception in High Conflict Zone
2013
A wide range of literature shows the persistence of high conflicts and power inequalities in the urban dimension. Consequently, there is a wide exploration of discrimination and subjugation of minority groups in urban areas; on the other hand, there are many progressive and radical urban movements (and scholars) around the world working (and researching) for better and more equal living conditions in the cities. The paper shifts this focus to landscape, analyzing landscape transformation in the West Bank as a result of power inequalities, discrimination, conflicts and colonization. The ongoing transformation of landscape in high conflict zones stretches the meaning of landscape from a natur…
Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo
2022
Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…
From Planning to Management of Cultural Heritage Sites: Controversies and Conflicts Between Unesco WHL Management Plans and Local Spatial Planning in…
2014
The paper investigates the relationship between the preservation of cultural heritage and planning in UNESCO World Heritage List (WHL) sites, with special reference to the relation be- tween Management Plans and other (local and regional) planning instruments and policies able to influence the promotion of sustainable and responsible development. This will be explored through a case study related to South-Eastern Sicilian UNESCO sites (in particular Syracuse). The analysis of this case study will point out the challenge of integrating different management and planning regimes - which mainly refer to a performative model - in a (still) very conformative planning sys- tem. The paper will show…

2009
Sicily is a territory characterized by historical and natural events which had, in time, strongly influ- enced the develop of its urban centres and building typologies. We have today many example of old town centres which preserve original characteristic structure, still clear although the changes become during the cen- turies. The earthly morphology, the climate and the avail- ability of materials influenced the constructive tech- niques too. The paper illustrates same studied cases of Sicilian old town, located in different part of the territory and so different in materials, urban structure and build- ing typologies. We considered them particularly interesting for the strong link which e…
