Advanced chronic kidney disease. Association between anxiety, depression and resilience

2019

Transgenic Killer Commensal Bacteria as Mucosal Protectants

2001

As first line of defense against the majority of infections and primary site for their transmission, mucosal surfaces of the oral cavity and genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and respiratory tracts represent the most suitable sites to deliver protective agents for the prevention of infectious diseases. Mucosal protection is important not only for life threatening diseases but also for opportunistic infections which currently represent a serious burden in terms of morbidity, mortality, and cost of cures. Candida albicans is among the most prevalent causes of mucosal infections not only in immuno- compromised patients, such as HIV-infected subjects who are frequently affected by oral and esoph…

Effectiveness and quality of life 10 years after transobturator suburethral tape surgery for stress urinary incontinence

2018

AIM We aimed to measure the effectiveness and quality of life (QoL) 10 years after transobturator suburethral tape surgery. METHODS We carried out a prospective observational study of 42 women assessed 10 years after surgical intervention with the transobturator technique. The main outcome measures were subjective and objective cure or improvement, complications, and changes in QoL. RESULTS The median abdominal leak point pressure had been 92 (82-113) mL H2 O prior to surgery. Thirty-six women (85.7%) remained cured (negative cough test) and 13 (31%) reported urine leakage during physical activity, percentages which were similar to those at a previous assessment at the 5th year. Urgency uri…

Comparison between Two Different Two-Stage Transperineal Approaches to Treat Urethral Strictures or Bladder Neck Contracture Associated with Severe U…

2012

Introduction. The recurrence of urethral/bladder neck stricture after multiple endoscopic procedures is a rare complication that can follow prostatic surgery and its treatment is still controversial.Material and Methods. We retrospectively analyzed our data on 17 patients, operated between September 2001 and January 2010, who presented severe urinary incontinence and urethral/bladder neck stricture after prostatic surgery and failure of at least four conservative endoscopic treatments. Six patients underwent a transperineal urethrovesical anastomosis and 11 patients a combined transperineal suprapubical (endoscopic) urethrovesical anastomosis. After six months the patients that presented comp…

Surgical and anatomical basis of autonomic nerve-preserving mesorectal excision for rectal cancer

2003

Adequate knowledge of the anatomy of the pelvis is a prerequisite to carry out a correct surgical technique in resection of rectal cancer. In this way, we can perform radical surgery, preserve the autonomic nerves and decrease local recurrence and urinary and sexual morbidity. The key to all this and the difference in results depends on a meticulous and detailed surgical technique.

Asymptotic modeling of electrochemical signaling: Testing Zn in urine for non-invasive bladder cancer diagnosis

2021

Abstract A theoretical model on chemical signaling for diagnosis based on the combination of signals for marker and inert and/or interfering metabolites is described. The model yields asymptotic relationships between the intensities of the signals representative of marker and accompanying metabolites compensating concentration fluctuations. The model fits well with voltammetric features associated to the oxidation of different urine metabolites and Zn(II) reduction in the same urine samples after alkaline digestion. As a result, a non-invasive electrochemical detection of urothelial carcinoma (bladder cancer, BC) is reported. Different diagnostic criteria are described all displaying high s…

Long-term results of ileocecal continent urinary diversion in patients treated with or without previous pelvic irradiation

2003

Purpose: Patients who receive pelvic irradiation may require urinary diversion to manage complications resulting from progressive malignancy or radiotherapy. The choice of urinary diversion is an important issue and remains controversial. We characterized the long-term outcome of urinary diversion with a continent ileocecal reservoir in patients who received pelvic irradiation versus those who underwent urinary diversion without previous irradiation. Materials and Methods: Continent urinary diversion with an ileocecal reservoir (Mainz pouch 1) was performed in 36 irradiated patients in a 9-year period. Morbidity, mortality, the reoperative rate and parameters associated with the surgical pr…

hTERT mRNA expression in urine as a useful diagnostic tool in bladder cancer. Comparison with cytology and NMP22 BladderCheck Test®

2018

Abstract Introduction To study the relationship between quantitative mRNA determination (hTERT) in patients with bladder tumor, history of bladder tumor, and in subjects without a history of this neoplasia. Material and methods A prospective randomized controlled study with 91 subjects included. The value of mRNA-hTERTN was determined in 63 patients with a history or suspicion of bladder tumor and in 28 controls. Urine samples were sent for evaluation of the mRNA level (hTERT), the cytological study and the NMP22 result. Results Differences were observed in mean hTERTN levels in each of the groups: tumor presence 21.33 ± 40.66, tumor history 2.16 ± 2.67, controls 0.9 ± 1.75 (p  Conclusions …

Long-term safety of tiotropium/olodaterol Respimat® in patients with moderate-to-very severe COPD and renal i…

2018

Introduction: The safety, lung function efficacy, and symptomatic benefits of combined tiotropium and olodaterol in patients with COPD were established in the 1-year TONADO (R) studies (NCT01431274; NCT01431287). As tiotropium is predominantly excreted by the kidneys, the long-term safety profile of tiotropium/olodaterol was investigated in patients with renal impairment in a prespecified safety analysis of the TONADO studies. Methods: These were 2 replicate, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, 52-week Phase III studies that assessed tiotropium/olodaterol compared with tiotropium or olodaterol alone (all via Respimat (R)) in patients with moderate-to-very severe COPD. In this analysis…

Exertional hematuria: definition, epidemiology, diagnostic and clinical considerations

2019

Abstract Exertional hematuria can be considered a subcategory of exercise-induced hematuria, characterized by painless appearance of erythrocytes in urine after recent physical exercise, not directly attributable to external traumatic injuries to the genitourinary system, and spontaneously resolving with rest. Although its frequency has enormous heterogeneity, depending on the athlete population, duration and intensity of exercise, technique used for identifying or quantifying hematuria and relative diagnostic thresholds, what clearly emerges from the scientific literature is that a certain degree of hematuria is commonplace after non-contact sports, especially running. This exertional hema…
