Efficacy and tolerability of a plant-based, multi-component cream (Ginetrox®) in vulvovaginal disorders of the genitourinary syndrome during menopaus…
2017
BACKGROUND Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is a symptomatic condition including vaginal dryness, irritation, dyspareunia and recurrent urinary tract infections which affects 40-54% of post-menopausal women. Although several estrogen-based therapies are available, it is generally preferable to avoid hormonal therapy, particularly in women with mild symptoms or at risk for estrogen-responsive neoplasia. Therefore, the most common treatment options are over-the-counter vaginal creams for symptomatic relief. METHODS Thirty-three postmenopausal women suffering from GSM were enrolled in this observational study. A multi-component cream (Ginetrox®, Indena, Milan, Italy) was applied on th…
The fate of implant after endoscopic injection of dextranomer/hyaluronic acid in vesicoureteral reflux: time to partial reabsorption and stabilization
2020
Summary Background/introduction Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) potentially leads to renal damage, scarring, and eventually end-stage renal disease. Endoscopic treatment is well tolerated in children, it has reduced costs, and it effectively prevents urinary tract infections (UTIs), while avoiding long term antibiotics use. Objective With the aim to investigate the time needed to reach the stabilization of the dextranomer/hyaluronic acid (Dx/HA) implants and to identify cut-off heights to ensure the success of the procedure, the authors analyzed ultrasonographic (US) intra-operative appearance of the mounds following endoscopic treatment for VUR and repeated the measurements during serial posto…
Usefulness of the Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio as a Predictor of Pneumonia and Urinary Tract Infection Within the First Week After Acute Ischemic S…
2021
Background: A high Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has been associated with post-stroke infections, but it's role as an early predictive biomarker for post-stroke pneumonia (PSP) and urinary tract infection (UTI) is not clear. Aim: To investigate the usefulness of NLR obtained within 24 h after AIS for predicting PSP and UTI in the first week. Methods: Clinical and laboratory data were retrieved from the University Hospital Brussels stroke database/electronic record system. Patients were divided into those who developed PSP or UTI within the first week after stroke onset and those who didn't. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves a…
PO-0779 Which Parameters Are Mandatory In Urinary Tract Infection In Children?
2014
Background The protocol of investigations in urinary tract infection (UTI) in children mandatory includes urianalysis, uroculture, reactive C protein (RCP), blood urea (BUN), renal ultrasonography and scintigraphy. Each one of these has limits to perform in children. Aims To establish the correlations between UTI investigations for argumentation the therapeutic decision. Methods Retrospective study of hospitalised paediatric patients for UTI. The study parameters were: age, symptoms, RCP, BUN, uroculture, renal ultrasonography, urinanalysis (leukocytes, nitrites, pH, density, proteins, erythrocytes, ascorbic acid-AA). Results Were studied 243 hospitalised and treated with antibiotics UTI. U…
Die laterale Dissektion des Mesorektums ; ein Risiko für den Plexus hypogastricus inferior
2004
Lateral mesorectal dissection may injure parasympathetic and sympathetic pelvic nerves and a partial or complete lesion of the autonomic pelvic nerves leads to urogenital dysfunctions affecting patient’s quality of life after rectum resection for rectal carcinoma. The aim of the present prospective study was to clarify the significance for nerve damage during lateral dissection based on standardized assessment parameters. 15 Patients underwent total mesorectal excision for rectal carcinoma (UICC I/II/III/IV: 1/5/3/6). Within the scope of the stanardized intraoperative data collection it was demonstrated, whether a complete preservation of the autonomie pelvic nerves was successful. In 11 pa…
Community-onset Pseudomonas aeruginosa urinary sepsis in elderly people: Predictive factors, adequacy of empirical therapy and outcomes.
2019
Purpose To know the predictive factors for Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) urinary sepsis in hospitalised elderly patients coming from community, the adequacy of empirical antibiotic therapy and its outcomes. Methods Retrospective case-control study conducted between 2007 and 2017. Patients aged 65 years or older with PA urinary sepsis were included as cases. Three age-matched controls, with urinary sepsis caused by other microorganisms, were selected for each case. Predictors for PA urinary sepsis were determined by logistic regression analysis. Adequacy of empirical antibiotic therapy and outcomes were compared between both groups. Results A total of 332 patients, from which 83 were cases, we…

AIM: To assess the esophageal motility in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and to compare those with patients with autoimmune disorders. METHODS: 15 patients with IBS, 22 with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 19 with systemic sclerosis (SSc) were prospectively selected from a total of 115 patients at a single university centre and esophageal motility was analysed using standard manometry (Mui Scientific PIP-4-8SS). All patients underwent esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy before entering the study so that only patients with normal endoscopic findings were included in the current study. All patients underwent a complete physical, blood biochemistry and urinary examination. The gr…

Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Children after Continent Urinary Diversion by Mainz Pouch Technique
2010
Purpose MAINZ pouch I urinary diversion provides a high-capacity, low-pressure reservoir. The use of terminal ileum can cause a decrease of vitamin B12 levels. Symptoms caused by vitamin B12 deficiency are rare, but some are irreversible, therefore annual check-ups are recommended. In this study the vitamin B12 levels in the above patients were analyzed in retrospect. Material and Methods The ileocecal segment was used for urinary tract reconstruction in > 80 children ≤17 years of age. B12 levels were determined at various time points within up to 21 years after surgery in 63 patients (8 with ileocecal bladder substitution, 55 continent cutaneous diversion). B12 values below 200pg/ml were c…
Appendiceal continence mechanisms in continent urinary diversion.
1996
The creation of a safe, reliable, and easy-to-perform continence mechanism remains one of the most important problems during continent urinary diversion. The advent of the use of the appendix as an efferent segment brought through the umbilicus has greatly facilitated surgical procedures with very favorable results. Our experience with the insitu appendix as an efferent segment during continent cutaneous urinary diversion using the Mainz-pouch I technique over the past 6 years revealed a markedly decreased complication rate of 3.2% as compared with 7.2% in patients who received an ileocecal intussusception nipple. The routine use of the appendix as a continence mechanism during continent ur…
