White-coat hypertension and cardiovascular risk

OBJECTIVE: To compare cardiovascular risk in white-coat hypertensives, normotensives and established hypertensives. METHODS: We studied 61 hypertensive individuals, 27 of whom were white-coat hypertensives, and 35 normotensives. All subjects underwent 24 h noninvasive blood pressure monitoring and Doppler echocardiographic examination of the heart; urine was tested for microalbuminuria and the fundi of the eyes examined for retinopathy. Night-rest urinary catecholamine excretion in relation to aspects of free time, work and background data in a teacher group

Free time, work and background data were related to night-rest catecholamine excretion rates in a teacher group (n = 137) during an autumn term. The explained interindividual variance increased slightly towards the end of the term. Adrenaline excretion was predicted better than noradrenaline, notedly by coffee consumption, amount of physical activity, and subjective stress feelings which explained 16% of the variance in adrenaline excretion during night rest. However, the results indicated that the differences in catecholamine excretion during night rest remained mostly unpredictable.

Correlation of Zinc with Oxidative Stress Biomarkers

Hypertension and smoking are related with oxidative stress (OS), which in turn reports on cellular aging. Zinc is an essential element involved in an individual’s physiology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation of zinc levels in serum and urine with OS and cellular aging and its effect on the development of hypertension. In a Spanish sample with 1500 individuals, subjects aged 20–59 years were selected, whose zinc intake levels fell within the recommended limits. Urinary glycosaminoglycans in Graves' ophthalmopathy.

An increased accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in retrobulbar tissues has been reported in patients with thyroid eye disease. We examined the quantitative urinary GAG excretion in 101 patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy of different classes, 36 patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism without ophthalmopathy, 14 patients with toxic nodular goitre and 103 control subjects.
