The Impact of 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT and PET/MRI on the Management of Prostate Cancer.
2018
Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a transmembrane protein with significantly increased expression in the cells and metastases of prostate carcinoma (CaP). PSMA-expression correlates with higher serum levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and a higher Gleason score (GS). This finding has led to the development of novel imaging modalities such as 68Ga-/18F-labeled PSMA positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI). This article reviews the literature pertaining to various new imaging technologies for the management of CaP. PSMA positron emission tomography/computed tomography appears to be an exce…
Combined effect of type and capture area of counting chamber and diluent on Holstein bull sperm kinematics
2018
The evaluation of sperm motion is crucial for processing of seminal doses for artificial insemination. Here, the combined effect of the type and capture area of three counting chambers, together with the type of diluent employed, on sperm motility was analysed. Ejaculates from thirteen Holstein bulls were used for sperm kinematic analysis with the ISAS® v1 CASA-Mot system, using two capillary-loaded counting chambers (Leja® and Cell-Vu® ) and one drop displacement chamber (Makler® ). Nine fixed positions were analysed per chamber type, considering central and lateral and three longitudinal fields. Independent of the diluent used, differences were found between the three chambers. Independen…
Dialysis vintage time has the strongest correlation to psychosocial pattern of oral health-related quality of life – a multicentre cross-sectional st…
2018
Background Aim of this cross-sectional, multicentre study was to investigate associations of dialysis vintage time in haemodialysis (CKD5D) patients with oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and dental and periodontal treatment need. Material and Methods CKD5D patients were divided into subgroups according to dialysis vintage time in different dialysis centres in Germany. OHRQoL was assessed with oral health impact profile (OHIP-G14). Dental treatment need was classified as presence of carious lesions. Periodontal treatment need was defined as periodontal screening index score (PSI) 3-4. Results In total, 190 participants were divided into the subgroups according to the time on CKD5…
The effect of high-volume online haemodiafiltration on nutritional status and body composition: the ProtEin Stores prEservaTion (PESET) study
2018
Background Compared with conventional haemodialysis (HD), online haemodiafiltration (OL-HDF) achieves a more efficient removal of uraemic toxins and reduces inflammation, which could favourably affect nutritional status. We evaluate the effect of OL-HDF on body composition and nutritional status in prevalent high-flux HD (HF-HD) patients. Methods In all, 33 adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) Stage 5 undergoing maintenance HF-HD were assigned to post-dilution OL-HDF (n = 17) or to remain on HF-HD (n = 16, control group) for 12 months. The primary outcome was the change in lean tissue mass (LTM), intracellular water (ICW) and body cell mass (BCM) assessed by multifrequency bioimpedance …
Incidence of Kidney Replacement Therapy and Subsequent Outcomes Among Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Findings From the ERA Registry.
2022
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: There is a dearth of data characterizing patients requiring kidney replacement therapy (KRT) for kidney failure due to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and their clinical outcomes. The aim of this study was to describe trends in incidence and prevalence of KRT among these patients as well as to compare their outcomes to patients treated with KRT for diseases other than SLE.STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study based on kidney registry data.SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Patients recorded in 14 registries of patients receiving kidney replacement therapy that provided data to the European Renal Association (ERA) Registry between 1992 and 2016.PREDICTOR: SLE as cause…
Clinical interval and diagnostic characteristics in a cohort of bladder cancer patients in Spain : a multicenter observational study
2017
Objective We performed a cohort study in seven hospitals in Spain to determine the clinical characteristics of incident patients with bladder cancer, the diagnostic process, and the conditions that might affect health care interval times. Results 314 patients with bladder cancer were included, 70.3 (Standard Deviation [SD] 11.2) years old and 85.0% male. Clinical stage was T1 in 45.9% of patients. The median interval time between first consultation and diagnosis was of 104.0 days (Inter quartile range [IQR]:112.0; range from 0 to 986), being shorter for those patients who attended a hospital for their first consultation. The median interval time between diagnosis and first treatment was of …
Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic in Children with CKD or Immunosuppression
2021
Infections are a major concern in children on KRT and with CKD. Risk factors include immunosuppression, multiple contacts in dialysis units, and hospital visits ([1][1]). Italy was one of the countries most affected by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak ([2][2
Haemolytic-uremic syndrome due to infection with adenovirus
2018
Abstract Rationale: Haemolytic-uremic syndrome is a rare but serious complication of bacterial and viral infections, which is characterized by the triad of: acute renal failure, microangiopathic haemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia, sometimes severe, requiring peritoneal dialysis. In Europe, hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) in paediatric pathology is primarily caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157, followed by O26. Beside these etiologies, there are other bacterial and viral infections, and also noninfectious ones that have been associated to lead to HUS as well: in the progression of neoplasia, medication-related, post-transplantation, during pregnancy or associated…
Accordance of Online Health Information on Prostate Cancer with the European Association of Urology Guidelines.
2017
Background: The internet is an emerging source of information for prostate cancer (PCa) patients. Since little is known about the quality of information on PCa provided online, we investigated its accordance to the latest European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines. Methods: A total of 89 German web pages were included for analysis. A quality model classifying the provider of information and its expertise was introduced. Correctness of provided information was systematically compared to the EAU guidelines. Results: Information was provided by medical experts (41%), media (1…
Management of undescended testes: European Association of Urology/European Society for Paediatric Urology Guidelines.
2016
Summary Context Undescended testis is the most common endocrinological disease in the male newborn period. Incidence varies between 1.0% and 4.6% in full-term neonates, with rates as high as 45% in preterm neonates. Failure or delay of treatment can result in reduced fertility and/or increased testicular cancer risk in adulthood. Objective To provide recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of boys with undescended testes which reduce the risk of impaired fertility and testicular cancer in adulthood. Evidence acquisition Embase and Pubmed were searched for all relevant publications, from 1990 to 2015 limited to English language. Data were narratively synthesized in light of methodolo…
