The 2019 Local Elections in Valencia’s Metropolitan Area

Voting behaviour in Valencia’s Metropolitan Area can be split into four periods: (1) During the early years of democracy (1979-1991) following the Franco dictatorship, the area was a stronghold of the Left; (2) In 1991, the City of Valencia switched and was governed by the Right; (3) In 2011, the Right extended its control to the whole of the Metropolitan Area; (4) In the May 2015 elections, the Left won not only in the ‘red’ metropolitan belt but also in the City of Valencia. This study looks at what happened in the last set of local elections in 2019. Coalition governments are common in the European political landscape in various tiers ofgovernment. However, such coalitions were an exception in the history of the Valencian Autonomy until 2015, which marked a new stage with the so-called El Botànic governments. Which factors explain this change in the Valencian political system? What are the features of such coalition governments? Can this model be applied to other political systems? The 2019 regional government election in The Valencian Country led to a new panorama on the Right. For the first time, there were three political parties competing for votes. In addition, the notoriety gained by the Far Right created a new political scene, posing a challenge to other parties. This paper analyses how the Partido Popular, Ciudadanos and Vox managed a campaign in which they were both electoral opponents but also potentially future parliamentary allies. Resumen. La provincia de Valencia como sistema territorial cuenta con diversos componentes de tipo ambiental y cultural que se articulan, dándole estructura, y que influyen en las alternativas de progreso. Dichas piezas del sistema territorial configuran el paisaje provincial y muchas de ellas, además, son consideradas como patrimonio cultural. Patrimonio y paisaje intervienen en la creación de identidades colectivas, así como en los procesos de desarrollo territorial, cuestión sobre la que nos centramos en este artículo.

El estudio de las grandes culturas políticas del franquismo se ha detenido en el análisis de ciertos discursos y prácticas que emanaban de los grandes líderes políticos del régimen. Desde nuestro punto de vista, ha faltado una necesaria reflexión sobre la concreción del desarrollo de esas culturas políticas en el régimen local. El aumento, en número y profundidad, de los estudios sobre la evolución política e ideológica de las instituciones locales en el régimen, unido a un creciente número de los centros documentales que lo han permitido, ha posibilitado avanzar en dicho conocimiento pero sin la consiguiente complementación con un estudio de las culturas políticas del nacionalismo español …

Enrique de Villena (1384-1434), noble aficionado a las letras, autor bilingüe en catalán y castellano, residente algunos años (ca. 1416-1429) de manera intermitente en la corte valenciana de Alfonso V de Aragón y Juan de Navarra, influyó en el concepto de literatura del autor de la novela caballeresca Curial e Güelfa (Enyego d’Àvalos?), escrita en catalán (Nápoles-Milán, c. 1445-1448) y relacionable con la corte italiana del Magnánimo. El Curial presenta conexiones intertextuales con la obra de Villena, además de hápax y neologismos compartidos.
