Novel VAMPIRE algorithms for quantitative analysis of the retinal vasculature

This paper summarizes three recent, novel algorithms developed within VAMPIRE, namely optic disc and macula detection, arteryvein classification, and enhancement of binary vessel masks, and their performance assessment. VAMPIRE is an international collaboration growing a suite of software tools to allow efficient quantification of morphological properties of the retinal vasculature in large collections of fundus camera images. VAMPIRE measurements are currently mostly used in biomarker research, i.e., investigating associations between the morphology of the retinal vasculature and a number of clinical and cognitive conditions.

VAMPIRE: Vessel assessment and measurement platform for images of the REtina

We present VAMPIRE, a software application for efficient, semi-automatic quantification of retinal vessel properties with large collections of fundus camera images. VAMPIRE is also an international collaborative project of four image processing groups and five clinical centres. The system provides automatic detection of retinal landmarks (optic disc, vasculature), and quantifies key parameters used frequently in investigative studies: vessel width, vessel branching coefficients, and tortuosity. The ultimate vision is to make VAMPIRE available as a public tool, to support quantification and analysis of large collections of fundus camera images.

Blood-Red Relations In and Out of Place : Women’s Self-Harm and Supernatural Crime in The Moth Diaries

In Canadian filmmaker Mary Harron’s The Moth Diaries (a Canadian/ American/Irish co-production), exploring adolescent girls’ friendships and self-harm in a boarding school setting, blood is out of place. It drips from the protagonist’s father’s wrist artery, willingly shed in suicide; involuntarily tarnishes her nightgown as menstrual blood; falls on the school director’s china figurines as nosebleed; and pours in the school library as a vampire-invoked rain. Moth uses blood to manifest the suicide contagion that Rebecca fears she has inherited from her artist father. Blood also signifies her resistance and recovery, enabled by her difficult relationship with her schoolmates, erstwhile best…

Vampīru tēma tiek plaši pētīta, un vampīra tēls ir kļuvis par nozīmīgu mūsdienu kultūras daļu. Šis maģistra darbs pēta vampīru Annas Raisas romānā un tā ekranizācijā, izmantojot tādus ar vampīrismu saistītus galvenos aspektus un elementus kā asinis, seksualitāte un eroticisms, nāve, identitāte un citādais, lai noteiktu, kādas vampīram raksturīgās iezīmes Raisa ir izmantojusi un kādas ir ieviesusi, tādējādi mainot priekšstatu par vampīru literatūrā un filmās. Iegūtie pētījuma rezultāti ļauj secināt, ka Raisas radītajam vampīram piemīt tādas agrīnajam vampīra tēlam raksturīgās pazīmes kā pievilcība, pārdabiskas spējas un nepieciešamība pēc asinīm, taču galvenā atšķirīgā iezīme ir tā cilvēcisk…
