The Structure and Behavioural Effects of Revealed Social Identity Preferences

A large body of evidence shows that social identity affects behaviour. However, our understanding of the substantial variation of these behavioural effects is still limited. We use a novel laboratory experiment to measure differences in preferences for social identities as a potential source of behavioural heterogeneity. Facing a trade-off between monetary payments and belonging to different groups, individuals are willing to forego significant earnings to avoid belonging to certain groups. The relationship between professional tournament structure on the national level and success in men's professional tennis.

This article discusses the relationship between a nation's men's professional tennis tournament structure and that nation's success in the international men's game. The 2002 men's professional tennis tournament calendar provided the distribution of events on the top thirty nations. Criteria for a nation's success in men's professional tennis were: nation's number of players with ATP points, nation's number of players in the top 200 ranking, and the combined ATP ranking of a nation's top 5 male players. Existence, nonexistence and uniqueness of positive solutions for nonlinear eigenvalue problems

We study the existence of positive solutions for perturbations of the classical eigenvalue problem for the Dirichlet $p-$Laplacian. We consider three cases. In the first the perturbation is $(p-1)-$sublinear near $+\infty$, while in the second the perturbation is $(p-1)-$superlinear near $+\infty$ and in the third we do not require asymptotic condition at $+\infty$. Cryopreservation of Digitalis obscura selected genotypes by encapsulation-dehydration

Shoot-tips from several genotypes of the cardenolide-producing perennial shrub Digitalis obscura L. were successfully cryopreserved using the encapsulation-dehydration technique. Precultivation on MS medium containing 0.5 M sucrose, followed by 2.5 h dehydration (final weight 30 %) induced shoot regrowth in 42 % of cryopreserved shoot-tips. Cold-hardening of the in vitro cultures before sucrose treatment dramatically increased shoot recovery up to 86 %. The optimized cryopreservation protocol was then employed using different shoot cultures from five D. obscura genotypes. Effects of reduced irradiance on hydraulic architecture and water relations of two olive clones with different growth potentials

Abstract The hydraulic architecture and water relations of two olive genotypes, ‘Leccino Dwarf’ (LD) and ‘Leccino Minerva’ (LM) growing at two irradiance levels i.e. full sunlight irradiance (HI) and 50% sunlight irradiance (LI) were studied. The two clones showed similar plant hydraulic conductances (Kplant) and similar conductance of roots and leaves (Kroot and Kleaf) when growing at equal irradiance levels. However, both Kplant and Kroot were significantly lower in LI plants than in HI ones. On the contrary, Kleaf was unaffected by the light regime. Solar influence on winter severity in central Europe

[1] The last two winters in central Europe were unusually cold in comparison to the years before. Meteorological data, mainly from the last 50 years, and modelling studies have suggested that both solar activity and El Nino strength may influence such central European winter coldness. To investigate the mechanisms behind this in a statistically robust way and to test which of the two factors was more important during the last 230 years back into the Little Ice Age, we use historical reports of freezing of the river Rhine. Quasiadditivity of Variational Capacity

We study the quasiadditivity property (a version of superadditivity with a multiplicative constant) of variational capacity in metric spaces with respect to Whitney type covers. We characterize this property in terms of a Mazya type capacity condition, and also explore the close relation between quasiadditivity and Hardy's inequality.

The limit state of indefinite plates on elastoplastic continuum

The limit analysis of indefinite plates resting on a continuous elastoplastic medium and subjected to a load distributed over a partial surface with a circular boundary yields the fundamental equation governing the problem. Minimum conditions are set and the solution that supplies the collapse load of the plate-soil system is found by variational calculus.
