Aptamers are short, single-stranded DNA or RNA oligonucleotide molecules that function as synthetic analogs of antibodies and bind to a target molecule with high specificity. Aptamer affinity entirely depends on its tertiary structure and charge distribution. Therefore, length and structure optimization are essential for increasing aptamer specificity and affinity. Here we present a general optimization procedure for finding most populated atomistic structures of DNA aptamers. Towards Computer-based Exams in CS1

Even though IDEs are often a central tool when learning to program in CS1, many teachers still lean on paper-based exams. In this study, we examine the “test mode effect” in CS1 exams using the Rainfall problem. The test mode was two-phased. Half of the participants started working on the problem with pen and paper, while the other half had access to an IDE. After submitting their solution, all students could rework their solution on an IDE. The experiment was repeated twice during subsequent course instances. The results were mixed. This study explores the nature of reciprocal commitment in academic careers. The article is based on a survey conducted in autumn 2013 among fixed-term employees at eight major universities in Finland (N = 810). The analysis is focusing on researchers who have a doctoral degree and who are working on a fixed-term contract at their university (n = 308). According to our study, researchers experience their working conditions are insecure and many of them have considered leaving their universities. The aim of this study was to look at the issue of nonresponse and self-selection bias in the context of a family study on daily family life. Data on the participating families and refusers were gathered as part of the wider Palette study in which questionnaires and diaries were used as data collection methods. On the basis of these data (N = 208 participating families and 119 refuser families), we profile the families left outside the study. Sosiaalisen vaihdon teorian mukaan vastavuoroisuus on tärkeää ikääntyneiden ihmisten suhteissa. Vapaaehtoistyössä vastavuoroisuus on oleellista, mutta sitä ei ole juuri tutkittu eläkeikäisten vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden kannalta. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, kuinka eläkeikäiset vapaaehtoistyöntekijät kokevat vastavuoroisuuden vapaaehtoistyössä. Kolme kuukautta kestäneen toimintajakson aikana vapaaehtoistyöntekijät auttoivat liikkumiskyvyn ongelmista kärsiviä ikäihmisiä osallistumaan kodin ulkopuoliseen toimintaan osana Vapaaehtoistyö, ulkoliikunta ja vanhusten hyvinvointi (VAU) -tutkimushanketta. Tarkastelen tutkielmassani äänioppaiden käyttöä Suomen taidemuseoissa. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytän kyselytutkimusta. Siitä saamallani aineistolla kuvaan ääniopastoimintaa taidemuseoissamme. Selvitän myös syitä, miksi ääniopastoimintaa ei museoissa ole aloitettu. Äänioppaista selvitän niiden käyttöaikaa, niiden tehtäviä sekä hyviä ja huonoja kokemuksia niistä. Haluan tietää, onko palautetta äänioppaidenkäyttäjiltä kerätty ja minkälaista saatu palaute on ollut. Olen kiinnostunut, millaisena museoammattilaiset näkevät äänioppaiden tulevaisuuden ja mitä kehitysideoita heillä niiden suhteen on. Minkälainen on suomalaisten nuorten visuaalinen lukutaito, kun katseltavana on kuvataidetta? Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan nuorten tapoja puhua taidekokemuksestaan taidekuvien katselutilanteissa tehdyn kyselyn sekä haastattelujen avulla. Tutkimuksessa pohditaan mm. nuorten käsitystä aidosta suomalaisesta maisemasta ja tarkastellaan, minkä tyyppinen taide voi vedota erilaisiin yleisöihin. Tavoitteena ei ole etsiä oikeita tai vääriä taiteen vastaanottotapoja, vaan piirtää alustavaa kuvaa taidekokemusten sanallistamisestasuomalaisessa kulttuurissa.
