Kvifor KRLE? Forhandling og forståing av føremåla for det norske religions- og livssynsfaget i læreplan og lærebøker

2020

There are many perceptions of and priorities for religious education (RE), both in Norway and across Europe. Norwegian RE is called upon to simultaneously promote national values and facilitate intercultural education. I explore how this is negotiated in and between, first, the national curriculum and a selection of RE textbooks, and then in the ongoing curricular revisions (20172020). While the outgoing curriculum stresses identity and heritage, the textbooks promote diversity and tolerance. Thus, the textbook authors appear to rely on more recent, international academic developments rather than the political priorities of the national curriculum, in what Oddrun M. H. Bråten has called a b…

Fifty Years of International Catholic–Lutheran Dialogue: Much Consensus, Little Fellowship?

2020

This article presents an overview and an assessment of the international Catholic–Lutheran dialogue through fifty years. During the process, a theological rapprochement that few had dreamt of when the work began has been manifested. In the text Facing Unity (1984), even a detailed plan for a processual realization of Catholic–Lutheran church fellowship is sketched. However, this plan has not been implemented, and the achieved doctrinal convergence has not been transformed into concrete forms of unity. The author also seeks to uncover some of the main causes of this impasse, largely reflecting challenges in contemporary ecumenism.

Forhandlinger Med Omkostninger. Muslimske Foregangskvinner i Den Norske Offentligheten.

2023

The last few years an increasing number of Muslim women have found a clear voice in the public sphere in Norway. Research into Islam confirms that Muslims, especially Muslim women, are presented in media in a way that is unrecognizable to themselves. The debates in the media surrounding Islam, especially the hijab controversy in both 2004 and 2009, have centered around gender equality, collective peer pressure vs individual freedom, and the urge to be made visible vs invisibility. This article explores how Muslim women in the public sphere in Norway negotiate identity in a partially contradictory dichotomy. Applying the perspective of theory on cultural studies, I will demonstrate how women…

Writing in German as a foreign language in Norwegian upper sec-ondary school: An investigation of patterns of language choices for meaning-making

2023

The main objective of this article is to identify and describe characteristic patterns of language choices in texts written by Norwegian upper secondary school students of German as a foreign language (GFL) (age 16/17, school year 12, 5th year of FL learning). The study maps language choices in a set of 12 learner responses to a writing prompt about interpreting a film title. The aim of the study is to describe these choices in terms of how the learners use ideational meaning-making resources to arrive at meaningful content. The study takes a systemic functional linguistics (SFL) approach and analyses the responses in terms of the following lexicogrammatical and discourse semantic systems o…

Communication Apprehension in EFL classrooms in Lower Secondary Schools : A case study of English teachers’ awareness of speech anxiety in their own …

2019

Master's thesis education EN502 - University of Agder 2019 This thesis studies educators’ awareness offoreign language anxiety (FLA), specifically communication apprehension,in Norwegian lower secondary schools. Communication is a key skillnecessary to masteringforeign languages, yet it is also the most anxiety inducing skill forforeign language learners(Horwitz et al., 1986).Despite the many challenges in learning a newlanguage, steps can be taken to ensure that students learn effectively. However, educators must first be aware of FLA and its effects on their students. Previous research shows that speech anxiety is the biggest impediment to the learning process (Arnold & Brown, 1999). FLA …

Group epistemic value

2021

AbstractSometimes we are interested in how groups are doing epistemically in aggregate. For instance, we may want to know the epistemic impact of a change in school curriculum or the epistemic impact of abolishing peer review in the sciences. Being able to say something about how groups are doing epistemically is especially important if one is interested in pursuing a consequentialist approach to social epistemology of the sort championed by Goldman (Knowledge in a social world. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1999). According to this approach we evaluate social practices and institutions from an epistemic perspective based on how well they promote the aggregate level of epistemic value ac…
