Predicting Electrical Power Consumption on Yearly Events for Substations: Algorithm Design and Performance Evaluations

2020

Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology (IKT590) Accurate prediction of electricity usage is critical for grid companies in or-der to ensure reliable power supply for their customers. Many factors in-fluence usage patterns, but generally they consist of yearly-, weekly- and daily trends in addition to stochastic noise due to random user behaviour. Besides the above-mentioned cyclic trends, certain yearly events, i.e. events that take place once per year, can affect usage patterns significantly and thus may cause abnormally high or -low power consumption. Therefore, it is in the interest of grid companies to predict the consumption on such events so they can take measure…

TsetlinGo : Solving the game of Go with Tsetlin Machine

2020

Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology (IKT590) The Tsetlin Machine have already shown great promise on pattern recognition and text categorization. The board game GO is a highly complex game, and the Tsetlin Machine have not yet been tested extensively on strategic games like this. This thesis introduces TsetlinGO and aims to Solve the game of Go with Tsetlin Machine. For predicting the next moves a combination of Tsetlin Machine and Tree Search was used. In the thesis a 9x9 board size was used for the game of Go, to prevent the problem from becoming to complex. This thesis goes through hyper-parameter testing for classification of the Go board game. A solution with T…

Playing endgame chess with the Tsetlin Machine

2020

Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology (IKT590) The report is about training an Artificial Intelligence(AI) that is able to play out endgames, using the existing solved endgame of chess to train the Tsetlin Machine on. This report describes the methods used to train and test a Tsetlin Ma-chine using both the convolutional and multiclass implementation. We have further tested out different methods to handle the data it trains on to investigate what methods work best. Where these methods are; to split the data for two machines for either white or black starting player, transforming the data to only be from one starting players perspective and one splitting based on resul…

Lost in Draft: Investigating Game Balance in Multiplayer Online Battle Arena Drafting

2021

Master´s thesis in Information and Communication Technology (IKT590) University of Agder, Grimstad This thesis explores modern machine learning solutions to turn-basedstrategy games. In particular, we explore the possibilities of equalizing the playing field for both teams in the draft phase of Defense of the Ancients 2 (Dota 2) and League of Legends (LoL), with both games being giants in the multi-million dollar esports industry. The thesis covers the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena video game genre and the draft phase the games use. We also discuss the tech-nology used to address the problem, as well as the basic concepts of modern machine learning that allowed this technology to arise. W…

Background noise classification and denoising of audio signals utilizing empirical wavelet transform and deep learning

2021

Master´s thesis in Information and Communication Technology (IKT590), University of Agder, Grimstad The importance of sound and speech cannot in human life cannot be overstated. Ambient sound informs us about our surroundings and warn us of potential dangers, such as a car approaching from behind. One of the most common modes of communication is speech. However, if it is contaminated with background noise, it may result in data loss. Recent advances in artificial intelligence enable machines to recognize and classify sound patterns, as well as remove complex background noise from contaminated speech. This thesis investigates a method for improving existing background noise classification an…

Playing the game of Hex with theTsetlin Machine and tree search

2020

Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology (IKT590) Hex is an abstract mathematical board game where the players aim to build a connection of pieces, traversing the board from edge to edge. The game requires the use of certain patterns to be played at a high level. Artificially Intelligent Hex players have had success using Monte Carlo tree search and current research efforts have introduced neural networks. This thesis looks into the recent Tsetlin Machine pattern-recognition technique, relying on interpretability, in combination with the Monte Carlo tree search method to play the game of Hex. A supervised learning approach has been employed in an effort to teach the Tset…

The Application of the Tsetlin Machine in Checkers

2020

Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology (IKT590) The Tsetlin Machine has shown promising results in the domain of board games such as Axis& Allies, showing that the Tsetlin Machine may be a contender to more well-known machine learning algorithms. This research aimed to find out how suitable the Tsetlin Machine is for the domain of Checkers, and how to best utilize it for the purpose of playing Checkers. In order to research this, the following questions had to be answered: Which Tsetlin Machine Configuration is best suited for predicting the results of Checkers games? To what degree can the Tsetlin Ma-chine predict the results of Checkers games? How well can a Checkers…

Generating Levels and Playing Super Mario Bros. with Deep Reinforcement Learning Using various techniques for level generation and Deep Q-Networks fo…

2020

Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology (IKT590) This thesis aims to explore the behavior of two competing reinforcement learning agents in Super Mario Bros. In video games, PCG can be used to assist human game designers by generating a particular aspect of the game. A human game designer can use generated game content as inspiration to build further upon, which saves time and resources. Much research has been conducted on AI in video games, including AI for playing Super Mario Bros. Additionally, there exists a research field focused on PCG for video games, which includes generation of Super Mario Bros. levels. In this thesis, the two fields of research are combined to…

Expanding Convolutional Tsetlin Machine for Images with Lossless Binarization

2020

Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology (IKT590) Deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) is known to be efficient in image classification but non-interpretable. To overcome the black box nature of CNN a derivative of the Tsetlin automata, the convolutional Tsetlin machine (CTM) which is transparent and interpretable, was developed. As CTM handles binary inputs, it is important to transform the input images into binary form with minimum information loss so that the CTM can classify them correctly and efficiently. Currently, a relatively lossy mechanism, called adaptive Gaussian thresholding, was employed for binarization. To retain as much information as possible, in th…
