Application of learning pallets for real-time scheduling by use of artificial neural network
2011
Author's version of a chapter in the book: 5th International Conference on Software, Knowledge Information, Industrial Management and Applications (SKIMA). Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/SKIMA.2011.6089986 Generally, this paper deals with the problem of autonomy in logistics. Specifically here, a complex problem in inbound logistics is considered as real-time scheduling in a stochastic shop floor problem. Recently, in order to comply with real-time decisions, autonomous logistic objects have been suggested as an alternative. Since pallets are common used objects in carrying materials (finished or semi-finished), so they have the possibility to undertake the …
Fifth Generation Networking Principles for a Service Driven Future Internet Architecture
2010
Published version of an article published in Wireless Personal Communications, vol. 57:393-411. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11277-010-0076-7 The vision of all-IP networks where IP forms the simple common layer understandable across the whole network has undeniable advantages. However, such simplicity comes as a major hurdle to flexibility and functionality to the architecture. This is evident from the increasingly numerous and complex engineering solutions and optimizations required to accommodate essential qualities like mobility, security, realtime communication support etc or to mitigate the shortcomings inherent in the 'traditional Internet' architec…
The use of anthracene as a model compound in a comparative study of hydrous pyrolysis methods for industrial waste remediation
2011
Author's version of an article published in Chemosphere, 84 (4), 403-408. Also available from the publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.chemosphere.2011.03.061 Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are very stable compounds and tend to bioaccumulate in the environment due to their high degree of conjugation and aromaticity. Hydrous pyrolysis is explored as a technique for the treatment of industrial water containing PAH, using anthracene as a model compound. The reactivity of anthracene under a range of temperatures and durations are studied in this paper. Aliquots of 1.0-10.0mg of anthracene in a range of 1.0-5.0 mL of H(2)O are subjected to hydrous pyrolysis under varied conditions of tempera…
The use of lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) as sorbent for PAHs removal from water.
2012
Author's version of an article in the journal: Journal of Hazardous Materials. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jhazmat.2012.03.038 Lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) has been explored as a sorbent for the removal of PAHs (phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene) from water. The efficacy of LECA as a sorbent for PAHs was assessed using contact time, mass of sorbent and sorption isotherms in a series of batch experiments. Maximum (optimum) sorption was reached at 21 h after which the amount of PAHs sorbed remained almost constant. Batch experiments were conducted by shaking a 100 ml solution mixture of individual PAHs (containing 0.02 mg/L) with LECA. T…
Missing Value Estimation for Microarray Data by Bayesian Principal Component Analysis and Iterative Local Least Squares
2013
Published version of an article from the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from Hindawi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/162938 Missing values are prevalent in microarray data, they course negative influence on downstream microarray analyses, and thus they should be estimated from known values. We propose a BPCA-iLLS method, which is an integration of two commonly used missing value estimation methods-Bayesian principal component analysis (BPCA) and local least squares (LLS). The inferior row-average procedure in LLS is replaced with BPCA, and the least squares method is put into an iterative framework. Comparative result shows that the proposed method has obtaine…
Mathematical modeling and parameters estimation of a car crash using data-based regressive model approach
2011
Author's version of an article in the journal: Applied Mathematical Modelling. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.apm.2011.04.024 n this paper we present the application of regressive models to simulation of car-to-pole impacts. Three models were investigated: RARMAX, ARMAX and AR. Their suitability to estimate physical system parameters as well as to reproduce car kinematics was examined. It was found out that they not only estimate the one quantity which was used for their creation (car acceleration) but also describe the car's acceleration, velocity and crush. A virtual experiment was performed to obtain another set of data for use in further research. An A…
Effect of a finite external heat transfer coefficient on the Darcy-Bénard instability in a vertical porous cylinder
2013
Publised version of an article from the journal: Physics of Fluids. Copyright (2013) American Institute of Physics. This article may be downloaded for personal use only. Any other use requires prior permission of the author and the American Institute of Physics. Article appears in Volume 25 issue 4 of the journal: http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4799253 The onset of thermal convection in a vertical porous cylinder is studied by considering the heating from below and the cooling from above as caused by external forced convection processes. These processes are parametrised through a finite Biot number, and hence through third-kind, or Robin, temperature conditions imposed on the lower and upper b…
Catalytic oxidation and reduction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present as mixtures in hydrothermal media
2012
Author's version of an article in the journal: Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/10406638.2012.663451 The reactivity of fluorene, anthracene, and fluoranthene under oxidation and reduction conditions were investigated in this study. This project looks at catalytic and green approaches of converting PAHs to less toxic and/or less stable derivatives that are amenable to further degradation. Hydrothermal reactions have been performed at 300°C with pure H2O and Nafion-SiO2 catalyst for oxidation, and pure H2O, HCOOH, Pd-C, and Nafion-SiO2 catalysts for reductive hydrogenation. Time series has been performed for both the oxidation and …
Climate change and genetic structure of leading edge and rear end populations in a northwards shifting marine fish species, the corkwing wrasse (Symp…
2013
Published version of an article in the journal:PLoS ONE. Also available from the Public Library of Science: http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0067492 Open Access One mechanism by which marine organisms may respond to climate shifts is range shifts. The corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops) is a temperate fish species, inhabiting the coasts of Europe, that show strong indications of current as well as historical (ice-age) range shifts towards the north. Nine neutral microsatellite DNA markers were screened to study genetic signatures and spatial population structure over the entire geographic and thermal gradient of the species from Portugal to Norway. A major genetic break (FST = 0.159 a…
Investigating the affordances of a flipped mathematics classroom from an activity theoretical perspective
2020
Abstract Flipped Classroom as a pedagogical framework has gained popularity at secondary and tertiary levels of mathematics education, but there is a lack of research based on a solid theoretical foundation. This article considers the flipped mathematics classroom from the perspective of affordances and cultural–historical activity theory. The empirical background is based on semi-structured interview data from eight first-year computer-engineering students following 1 year of flipped classroom teaching. The thematic analysis of the data indicates that the flipped format offers a range of affordances at various levels of the activity system. This article advances research on affordances for…
