Reasoning with paper and pencil: The role of inscriptions in student learning of geometric series

2009

The purpose of this article is to analyse how students use inscriptions as tools for thinking and learning in mathematical problem-solving activities. The empirical context is that of learning about geometric series in a small group setting. What has been analysed is how students made use of inscriptions, self-made as well as those provided by text books and teachers, and the role these inscriptions played in the coordination of students’ learning/communication. Through the use of inscriptions (made on the chalkboard and with paper and pencil), the students externalised their thinking while engaging in mathematical reasoning on the topic of geometric series. The inscriptions were significan…

Et introduksjonskurs til GeoGebra : en designstudie av introduksjonskurset med fokus på å lære å bruke i 1T i videregående skole

2016

Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 As a teacher, I have observed over the past years a change in focus on the use of tools in the teaching of mathematics. Starting in spring 2015 the use of digital tools by students will be a requirement in the examinations in mathematics at high school level. This means that teachers must be even more aware of how we can best help our students to master the use of such tools while refining their understanding of mathematics. The aim of my study was to find a way to introduce GeoGebra (a mathematical tool with options for dynamic geometry, for plotting functions, and for CAS) to students in grade 11. The introduction should be su…

Exhumation of the High‐Pressure Tsäkkok Lens, Swedish Caledonides: Insights From the Structural and White Mica 40Ar/39Ar Geochronological Record

2020

Integrated structural, geochemical, and geochronological investigations were conducted on metasedimentary rocks in the eclogite-bearing Tsäkkok Lens of the Seve Nappe Complex (Scandinavian Caledonides) to resolve its exhumation history. Three deformation events are defined. D1 is likely related to the prograde to peak-metamorphic stages, represented by a locally preserved S1. D2 resulted in vertical shortening and is defined by a pervasive S2 and cm-/m-scale F2 closed folds. D2 terminated with Scandian thrusting, which emplaced the overlying Köli Nappe Complex. D3 records NE-SW shortening and constitutes m-/km-scale F3 open folds that deformed the Tsäkkok Lens and Köli Nappe Complex togethe…

Analysis of composition, morphology, and biosynthesis of cuticular wax in wild type bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and its glossy mutant

2021

Abstract In this study, cuticular wax load, its chemical composition, and biosynthesis, was studied during development of wild type (WT) bilberry fruit and its natural glossy type (GT) mutant. GT fruit cuticular wax load was comparable with WT fruits. In both, the proportion of triterpenoids decreased during fruit development concomitant with increasing proportions of total aliphatic compounds. In GT fruit, a higher proportion of triterpenoids in cuticular wax was accompanied by a lower proportion of fatty acids and ketones compared to WT fruit as well as lower density of crystalloid structures on berry surfaces. Our results suggest that the glossy phenotype could be caused by the absence o…

Embryonic development in corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops

2019

Corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops, is one of the main species used as cleaner fish to combat sea lice infestation in salmon aquaculture; however, there is little knowledge about its biology. Here, we describe the embryonic development of this species and examine the viability of the eggs under three temperature regimes. The experiments were conducted at three water temperature regimes, 12, 15, and 18°C, which resemble common sea water temperatures registered during the spawning season of corkwing wrasse at different latitudes along the Norwegian coast. Corkwing wrasse spawn small spherical eggs of 0.75–0.80 mm in diameter (mean 0.78, CV = 3.6%) with several oil droplets and go through eight…

A Spatio-temporal Probabilistic Model of Hazard and Crowd Dynamics in Disasters for Evacuation Planning

2013

Published version of a chapter in the book: Recent Trends in Applied Artificial Intelligence. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-38577-3_7 Managing the uncertainties that arise in disasters – such as ship fire – can be extremely challenging. Previous work has typically focused either on modeling crowd behavior or hazard dynamics, targeting fully known environments. However, when a disaster strikes, uncertainty about the nature, extent and further development of the hazard is the rule rather than the exception. Additionally, crowd and hazard dynamics are both intertwined and uncertain, making evacuation planning extremely difficult. To address this chal…

Trace Element Concentration and Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis in Blueberries and Bilberries: A Tool for Quality and Authenticity Control

2021

Vaccinium genus berries—wild bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and cultivated highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.)—are consumed worldwide, and their consumption has a trend of stable increase. Thus, considering their wide use in ethnomedicine, for juice and jam production, as functional food, as well as their use in preparations of extracts which have application potential in pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, studies regarding the composition of these berries are of special importance. The aim of this study is to characterise the elemental and isotopic composition, as well as variation in element concentration in bilberries gathered from different sites in Northern Europe…

Analytic evaluation of the dipole Hessian matrix in coupled-cluster theory

2013

The general theory required for the calculation of analytic third energy derivatives at the coupled-cluster level of theory is presented and connected to preceding special formulations for hyperpolarizabilities and polarizability gradients. Based on our theory, we have implemented a scheme for calculating the dipole Hessian matrix in a fully analytical manner within the coupled-cluster singles and doubles approximation. The dipole Hessian matrix is the second geometrical derivative of the dipole moment and thus a third derivative of the energy. It plays a crucial role in IR spectroscopy when taking into account anharmonic effects and is also essential for computing vibrational corrections t…

Rockefeller Philanthropy and Mathematical Emigration between World Wars

2015

Published version of an article in the journal: The Mathematical Intelligencer. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00283-014-9530-9 This article discusses one aspect of Rockefeller support for mathematics: the emigration of mathematicians from Europe. For the broader policies of the Rockefeller philanthropies for internationalization of mathematics, see my monograph Siegmund-Schultze (2001), which together with other sources will be broadly used in the following and will be quoted as RI.
