Embryonic development of corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops

2016

Master's thesis Aquatic Ecology BIO500 - University of Agder 2016 Eggs from corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops were described, photographed and illustrated to characterise the embryonic development of this species. Egg development was divided into 8 stages from fertilisation until hatching with descriptions of key features for each stage. The rate of development in corkwing wrasse eggs at temperatures commonly found along the Norwegian coast (12, 15 and 18 C) was also investigated. The rate of development was faster at higher temperatures. Keywords: labridae, cleaner fish, embryonic development, corkwing wrasse

Active-passive decentralized H∞ control for adjacent buildings under seismic excitation

2011

Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the 18th IFAC World Congress 2011. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.3182/20110828-6-IT-1002.01192 In this paper, a control strategy to reduce the vibrational response of adjacent buildings under seismic excitation is presented. The proposed strategy combines passive linking elements with an active decentralized H∞ control system. The overall active-passive control system admits decentralized design and operation, and achieves an excellent vibrational reduction when the active control system works; in case of a full or partial failure of the active control system, a remarkable reduction in the vibrational res…

Robust delay-dependent H∞ control of uncertain time-delay systems with mixed neutral, discrete, and distributed time-delays and Markovian switching p…

2011

Author's version of an article published in the journal: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/tcsi.2011.2106090 The problem of robust mode-dependent delayed state feedback H ∞ control is investigated for a class of uncertain time-delay systems with Markovian switching parameters and mixed discrete, neutral, and distributed delays. Based on the LyapunovKrasovskii functional theory, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities for the stochastic stability and stabilization of the considered system using some free matrices. The desired control is …

Gutter og jenters opplevelse av matematikk En studie av ungdomsskoleelevers oppfatninger og holdninger til matematikk

2015

Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk- Universitetet i Agder, 2015 There are many studies focusing on mathematics in school with particular attention to boys’ and girls’ perspective. I want to give a new contribution that considers whether there are differences in how boys and girls see themselves in relation to mathematics. I also want to investigate whether a decreasing level in grades in mathematics tests have an effect on how students see themselves in relation to the subject. This is discussed by looking at students' beliefs and attitudes towards the learning and teaching of mathematics. I also want to look at the type of teaching and tasks boys and girls prefer. Data collection is done by…

Banknæringens digitale hamskifte : en kvalitativ studie om DNBs digitalisering i møtet med eldre kunder

2016

Masteroppgave samfunnskommunikasjon- Universitetet i Agder, 2016 The purpose of this thesis is to better understand the digitization of the banking sector in Norway and how it affects the relationship between the bank and older customers. One of the reasons being that there are few examples of Norwegian research on the elderly and their use of Information and Communications-Technology (ICT). The theoretical approach is interdisciplinary, combining theory from fields such as information systems theory (Technology Acceptance Model), conceptual design theory (Service design) and sociological theory (Socialgerontology). Using a qualitative research method I interviewed four elderly customers of…

First-year engineering students’ use of their mathematics textbook - opportunities and constraints

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematics Education Research Journal. Also available from the publlisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s13394-012-0040-9 The role of the mathematics textbook at tertiary level has received limited exposure in previous research although it is likely that students work individually and that some of this work depends on the use of the textbook. The aim of this study was to investigate the process of approaching the textbook from epistemological, cognitive, and didactical perspectives. The focus was on identifying and discussing the opportunities and constraints in the process. The study was an explorative case study and the participants were fi…

Normal pressures and frictional tractions on shallow conical hopper walls after concentric filling: Predictions and experiments

2013

Author's version of an article in the journal: Chemical Engineering Science. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ces.2012.11.028 A silo with a shallow hopper is designed to achieve the required silo capacity when the headroom available is limited, provided that the issue of segregation of stored particulate solids is not a problem. Several analytical models have been proposed to try to predict the design loads for such shallow silo hoppers to guarantee their structural integrity. In this study, a novel finite element analysis has been conducted to explore the development of pressures and tractions on the wall of a full scale shallow hopper when it is filled wit…

Positive L1 observer design for positive Switched systems

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00034-013-9737-6 This paper investigates the problem of L1 observer design for positive switched systems. Firstly, a new kind of positive L1 observer is proposed for positive switched linear delay-free systems with observable and unobservable subsystems. Based on the average dwell time approach, a sufficient condition is proposed to ensure the existence of the positive L1 observer. Under the condition obtained, the estimated error converges to zero exponentially, and the L1 -gain from the disturbance input to the estimated error is less t…

Toward learning autonomous pallets by using fuzzy rules, applied in a Conwip system

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-012-4057-8 Nowadays, material planning and control strategies are becoming continuously complex tasks spanning from individual plants to logistic networks. In fact, this is the consequence of increasing intricacy in product variants and their respective convolution in networks’ structures. Customers ask for specific products with individual characteristics that force companies for more clever performances by more flexibility. For doing so, the existing planning and control systems, which work based on central m…

Probabilistic maturation reaction norms assessed from mark-recaptures of wild fish in their natural habitat

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Ecology and Evolution. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/ece3.1044 Open Access Reaction norms are a valuable tool in evolutionary biology. Lately, the probabilistic maturation reaction norm approach, describing probabilities of maturing at combinations of age and body size, has been much applied for testing whether phenotypic changes in exploited populations of fish are mainly plastic or involving an evolutionary component. However, due to typical field data limitations, with imperfect knowledge about individual life histories, this demographic method still needs to be assessed. Using 13 years of direct mark-recap…
